OK, so this isn't exactly my best work, but with it being a few years since I've done a Japanese promotion I'm not as familiar with everybody here as I was. So its going to probably take me at least a few weeks to really get into a groove with these guys. Which is part of the excitement of doing something completely different I suppose, anyways let me know your thoughts on this show.
NWA Japan Debut Show Live on Samurai TV
Welcome to the very first NWA Japan show. NWA Japan's aim is to make puroresu a force in the NWA once again, after several years of failed attempts in what some may call the spiritual home of professional wrestling. The finest athletes in Japan have assembled for this show, along with some talented stars from American and around the world.
Our show begins with some of the biggest names in Japanese wrestling history coming out for a special opening ceremony, welcoming the fans and endorsing the wrestlers on tonights show. Amongst the names were Antonio Inoki, Riki Choshu, Genichiro Tenyru, Kenta Kobashi, Akira Taue, Tatsumi Fujinami, Keiji Mutoh, Masahiro Chono, Jushin "Thunder" Lyger, Toshiaki Kawada and Hiroshi Hase. The fans respectfully watched and applauded these legendary figures, and seem ready for our show tonight, starting with our opening contest.
The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) vs Daisuke Sekimoto and Taiji Ishimori
A very fast paced and fun opener that helped to warm up the fans. The story here was Sekimoto and Ishimori trying to gel in order to try and keep up with a much more experienced tag team in The Young Bucks, who were able to use their crisp, fast paced teamwork to full effect here. Ishimori and Sekimoto did impress, but more often than not it was when they were one to one with either Matt or Nick. Eventually The Bucks would hit More Bang For Your Buck on Ishimori to win this one.
Winners- The Young Bucks
Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto and Masato Tanaka vs Jun Akiyama, Go Shiozaki and Minoru Suzuki
An all star six man tag that showcased everybody and was a ton of fun to watch. A rivalry brewed during this one between Akiyama and Tanahashi, who had some intense exchanges that made me want to see a match between these two. Goto mixed it up with Shiozaki in a battle of the two younger talents that was also very entertaining, and we had the veterans Tanaka and Suzuki beating the hell out of each other to which was equally fun to watch. The match completely broke down by the end with the ref losing control, but this is Japan so we just let them go at it and settle their differences. Tanaka would end up pinning Suzuki after the Complete Dust.
Winners- Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto and Masato Tanaka
Post match Akiyama and Tanahashi continued to brawl all around ringside, as officials ran down to break this thing up before it got out of hand. Could we soon see a match between these two?
We go backstage to Michael Elgin, who is giving his thoughts on the upcoming match with Takeshi Morishima.
"Why did I choose to come here to Japan? Its very simple, I want to prove myself. For the past few years despite my immense talent and unbreakable spirit, I've never achieved my potential, I've never reached the heights in this sport that I could, much like Japan itself in the NWA, but thats about to change. I'm going to take on the best that Japan and the world has to offer, and become the most dominant gaijin who has ever wrestled in this country, more dominant than Steve Williams, more dominant than Terry Gordy, more than the Funks or Big van Vader or Stan Hansen. And how will I prove it. By being UNBREAKABLE!"
Special Challenge Match
Michael Elgin vs Takeshi Morishima
What a match this was, just utterly brutal from start to finish, a war from start to finish. Elgin may not have been as tall or as heavy as Morishima, but he matched him blow for blow and even managed to overpower him with some power moves that wowed the Japanese fans who weren't that familiar with him. Morishima is a force and he showed that dominant power and agility of his here, tossing Elgin around like a small child at times, but he couldn't keep him down. The two exchange some vicious strikes as this match came close to its conclusion, with Elgin dazing Morishima with some baskfists. REVOLUTION ELGIN BOMB! 1-2-NO AND MORISHIMA IS ON HIS FEET! Morishima grabs Elgin, BACKDROP DRIVER! 1-2-NO AND NOW ELGIN IS ON HIS FEET! The two exchange Lariats and Morishima eventually turns Elgin inside out with one. BACKDROP DRIVER! 1-2-ELGIN GETS HIS FOOT ON THE ROPES! Morishima calls for the Amaze Impact as he lifts up the limp Elgin for it. He goes for it BUT ELGIN REVERSES TO THE CROSSFACE! Morishima is right in the middle of the ring and he has nowhere to go, HE TAPS, WHAT A WIN FOR ELGIN!
Winner- Michael Elgin
Post match Morishima offers Elgin a handshake, but Elgin slaps him in the face and walks away, which the fans did not appreciate. They give Morishima a warm round of applause as he leaves and our next match begins
NWA Japan Tag Team Title 4 Way Match
Timesplitters (Alex Shelley and Kushida) vs Forever Hooligans (Alex Koslov and Rocky Romero) vs Kensuke Office (Kensuke Sasaki and Katsuhiko Nakajima) vs Young Money (Big E and Rich Swann)
An interesting four way tag match here with a great sense of urgency: the opportunity to become the first ever NWA Japan Tag Team Champions is a major honour and one that any one of these teams would love to earn. Young Money were definitely the least experienced team in this one, but they put up a good fight and were an even match for the other teams. Big E and Sasaki had some fantastic back and forth power exchanges in particular that got the crowd into it. Timesplitters and Forever Hooligans along with Nakajima and Swann were responsible for the pure wrestling in this one, which was intercepted by some big high flying manoeuvres from all four teams. It would end up being the Kensuke Office pairing who would come out on top, with Nakajima showing lots of aggression and getting the biggest win of his career, smashing Swann with some big forearm strikes before nailing the German Suplex to get 3!
Winners- Kensuke Office
Nakajima looks delighted to have won some gold in the NWA at long last, fulfilling some of that great promise of his in the process, while Sasaki seems more pleased for his protégé than about winning the belts: after all he has won a lot more than this in his long and storied career. Congratulations to the new champions!
USA vs Japan Tag Team Challenge
Team USA (AJ Styles, Paul London, Jay Lethal and Daniel Puder) vs Team Japan (Kota Ibushi, KENTA, Naomichi Marufuji and Shuji Kondo)
As was mentioned in the preview, this match almost speaks for itself with the quality of talent on show. And they did all match up to each other quite well. Kondo and Puder went at it a lot here, they almost went into borderline MMA territory with the way they were battling, with Kondo refusing to back down from a man who has been so dominant in Windy City. Styles and Marufuji maixed it up a fair bit here to, both are very experienced and spectacular high fliers who have also developed superb ground games, which was on full display here. Lethal and London formed a kind of tag pairing against Ibushi and KENTA, with their exchanges being more junior in style, with some double teams and submissions thrown in there for good measure. Obviously this one was going to break down at some point, leading to a plethora of dives to the floor, with Puder the only one not pulling out a big high spot (because he was on the receiving end of most of them). The American team ended up pulling out what some may call an upset in the home country of the opposing team, as Styles nailed Ibushi with a Styles Clash and got 3.
Winner- Team USA
We see a hype video for our main event, followed by an interview (in Japanese) with Kazuchika Okada. My Japanese is not great, but the jist of it was that Okada want to bring about his own "rain of terror" on the NWA, first of all by taking the NWA Japan Heavyweight Title, then challenging the World Champion Samoa Joe to a rematch from he NWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament to take his belt away. Okada calls it his destiny to "rain supreme" over the NWA as its ruler and rainmaker!
Nakamura comes down with a fairly basic entrance, followed by Okada who has quite the entrance. Pyro goes off creating a rain effect as Okada swaggers to the ring and pulls the Rainmaker pose to massive boos from the fans. This one is going to be good.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs Kazuchika Okada
A great match here no doubt, definitely worthy of its slot as the main event of our show, but personally I don't think it was the best match of the show. That's not an insult to either man, its just been such a high standard tonight that it was going to be difficult to follow that. This one was largely mat based, as Okada worked on the neck of Nakamura to setup for his Red Ink submission hold, while Nakamura chose the arm in order to setup for his Cross Armbreaker hold. They built the match well before things exploded at the end, and the near falls started coming in. Okada signalled for the Rainmaker, only for Nakamua to kick up, take Okada down with a Lariat followed by the Boma Ye. 1-2-NO! Nakamura locks the Cross Armbreaker in, as Okada struggles, only to reverse to the Red Ink! Its Nakamura's turn to struggle, that neck of his really hurting, but he makes the ropes. Okada lifts Nakamura up, RAINMAKER! 1-2-NO! Okada lifts up Nakamura a second time and goes for it again, BUT NAKAMURA REVERSES TO THE CROSS ARMBREAKER! Okada struggles for the ropes and he also manages to make it. Nakamura calls for a second Boma Ye, charges the ropes BUT OKADA REVERSES TO THE RED INK! Nakamura struggles but he can't escape, HE TAPS!
Winner- Kazuchika Okada
Okada strikes his Rainmaker pose a vows that NWA Japan is his to conquer, as Nakamura leaves and our show comes to an end. Make sure to come and see NWA Japan live on tour, and if you can't, catch our weekly highlights show. See you next time puro fans!
