NWA OVERDRIVE: SHOW 1
Date: 06/18/2014
Location: Bridgeport, CT
The arena we are in consists of maybe 2,000 possible seats, with not as many filled, but it was to be expected. "Deal With the Devil" by Pop Evil hits the speakers, and out comes President of Operations Joseph Rother to the ring. The President explains that tonight is going to be a night of tournament matches, with the main event crowning the first ever Heavyweight champion. He says history begins to tonight, and while the beginnings may be humble, the action and the competitors promise to be unforgiving!
NWA OVERDRIVE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT
Rene Dupree vs. Antonio Thomas vs. Darren Young
Rene Dupree has dark hair and a long goatee, and is now covered in tattoos; he is far from the "French Phenom" that he used to be, and his viciousness only punctuated that in this contest. Darren Young was clearly the favorite, as the fans got behind the fun loving young man and tried to cheer him to victory. The conceited and narcissitic "Heart Throb" Antonio Thomas would show a fair amount of skill and storytelling ability, really drawing the fans in against him, but the high impact, unforgiving style that Dupree was unleashing just got the better of both of his opponents, and he advanced in the tournament after a wicked Death Valley Bomb to Thomas for the three count.
Dupree gets on the microphone after the match and says it has been a long time since he fought in front of an American crowd, and he forgot just how ungrateful and disgusting they all were! He says tonight, he wins the belt for him, not for any of them, and he claims there is no one in the world who could stop him!
NWA OVERDRIVE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT
Christian York vs. Xavier Woods vs. Derrick Bateman
York has the clear experience edge coming into this, but with a youthful vigor, Woods and Bateman both brought a lot to the table to this triple threat match. Woods has an infectious charisma and showmanship that had the fans behind him, while Bateman's power and skill were undeniable. York was able to use his wisdom, however, to pick his spots and make them count, hitting some big, high impact kick variations and dives to turn the tide of the match more than a couple of times, and that ended up being what brought him through to the finish. Woods looked like he might put Bateman away with a Sweeping DDT, but York managed to come off the top with a Frog Splash, smashing Woods and crushing Bateman, leading him to pin Bateman himself and advance to the finals of this tournament.
Christian York takes the microphone after the match and thanks the fans for being here tonight and supporting all of the great talent on this show. He says tonight, he's got a chance to become the face of this company, and while head what Rene Dupree had to say after winning his last match, he says that that all sounds pretty good and tough, but it's also a lie! Tonight, Christian York proves why he is one of the elite in the sport, and why Rene Dupree should pack his bags and head back to Canada where he belongs!
NWA OVERDRIVE X DIVISION TITLE TOURNAMENT
Delirious vs. Kid Kash
The X Division championship will be decided on the next show, which meant these guys weren't leaving anything in the tank for tonight. Both men are long time veterans and hugely skilled, but they have very different mentalities in the ring; when speaking of Delirious, though, just about everybody has a different mentality. Delirious would throw off Kash with his unorthodox style and rantings, but Kash has seen a lot in his day and wasn't about to give up his game plan, which was pure destruction and decimation. Kash would manage to escape from a painful looking Cobra Stretch and even kicked out of Shadows Over Hell, leaving an already confounding Delirious very confused. Delirious would try to dig deeper into his long list of finishing holds, but Kash only needed one move to put it all to rest and after an entire match of trying to hit it, he finally planted Delirious with his show stopping Brainbuster to put him down for the three and advance to the finals.
NWA OVERDRIVE X DIVISION TITLE TOURNAMENT
Stevie Richards vs. Jimmy Jacobs
You saw the technicality and high flying of the X Division in the last match, but this match spoke more towards the general chaos that can happen when you set no limits or rules to the madness of a wrestling match. These two are both just master storytellers in the ring, and they gave these fans a match that went all over the arena, with Jacobs playing the dastardly villain that he is and getting these fans solidly behind Richards. Jacobs would bust Richards open early, utilizing a spike to the forehead that would ultimately be removed by the ref, but the damage was already done. Richards would fight back, scratching and clawing and showing the grit that has won him many championships in his decades in the business. Jacobs would try to use furniture to finally seal the fate of Stevie, but Richards would end up Superkicking a chair right into Jacobs' face, following up with an Implant DDT onto that same chair, and that was enough to end it. It will be Kid Kash taking on Stevie Richards for the X Division championship on the next show!
NWA OVERDRIVE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FINALS
Christian York vs. Rene Dupree
Both men came in without a whole lot of love in their matches, but showed an effectiveness that comes with years of experience and an unbreakable desire to win. This left things looking really interesting, and the fans ended up getting behind the more exciting and compelling York, who would play to them more in this particular match, while Dupree really started to show his dark side. The sinister Dupree showed that he wanted nothing more than to hurt and break York both physically and mentally, maybe trying to send a message to the whole locker room as he pursued his championship dreams. York would feed on the crowd, fighting back and landing a Handspring Enzuigiri to get the momentum shifted. He would attempted to deliver that Frog Splash he'd used earlier, but Dupree would get up in time to stop him by diving into the ropes and crotching him up top. Dupree would deliver a big Superplex from there, but only gained a two count. York would have to battle his way back to his feet again, as the fans were very vocally against Dupree and chanted on York with both personal and patriotic calls in unison, giving the Virginia native something to hold onto as Dupree tried to drain the life from him. York would fight back with kicks and open hand blows, only to get cut off with a knee. Dupree would try for another Suplex variation, but York broke free and delivered his Mood Swing! York would hang on tight, but only a two! He would pick up Dupree and send him down with a Body Slam, trying once more for a Frog Splash, but Dupree gets the knees up! Dupree picks up York and lifts him on his shoulders, running and driving him head first into the turnbuckles before spinning and drilling him with a Death Valley Bomb! Dupree hooks a leg half heartedly, but it doesn't matter. It's all over, and Rene Dupree is the first NWA Overdrive Heayweight Champion!
