(I will be adding to this in the future)
Parts Unknown Wrestling: A Short History
Parts Unknown Wrestling is undoubtedly one of the more unique pro wrestling promotions out there. It is also very difficult to find out any information on said promotion due to its existence only being discovered a couple of week ago when it joined the NWA. However, after looking through their official website, along with some very obscure sources, I have managed to put together a summarised history that gives at least a little information into this company's background.
It is unknown who actually formed Parts Unknown, all that is known is that it began in 1941, as a way for the small town of Parts Unknown to bring some excitement to their daily lives. The second world war had no effect on the town due to nobody knowing where it was, hence why they had the opportunity to do such a thing. The early shows of Parts Unknown Wrestling were held in a barn in a ring without ropes (as they couldn't afford any) in front of a crowd of around a dozen people.
The promotion slowly grew until the introduction of the Unknown Network in 1960, the town's local TV network. With little else to put on, Parts Unknown Wrestling was given a primetime slot once a week for a TV show, along with regular specials, and this has run uninterrupted to this very day.
While Parts Unknown Wrestling has always developed its own talent from the very beginning, it has also made use of a number of famous faces from video games, TV and movies in the past, sometimes as themselves and other times under an alias. Some of these include The Mario Brothers (former Tag Team Champions, with Mario a former Heavyweight Champion), Cloud Strife (former Heavyweight Champion) and Bubba the Love Sponge (former Tag Team Champion under the name Bubba the DJ), amongst many, many others.
There have been a number of professional wrestlers who have guest starred in some shape or form in Parts Unknown Wrestling. Some examples include Necro Butcher (competing in a brutal brawl with Beard Samuelson), Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman, Chad Collyer, Val Venis and DDP amongst again many, many others.
In fact the most infamous show in Parts Unknown Wrestling history involved an outside wrestler, that man being Billy Gunn. Billy Gunn is, for whatever reason, seen as a megastar on the level of Hulk Hogan in Parts Unknown, and to celebrate this his appearance was labelled "Billy Gunn Appreciation Night", though is now commonly referred to by fans as "The One With Billy Gunn". Billy Gunn was involved in at least 80% of the segments on the show, including a 2 minute squash opener, losing a Loser Leaves Town match only to return in the very next match to win the Heavyweight Tile, chasing a midget version of Triple H around the arena with a sledgehammer for 10+ minutes, and somehow losing the title in the main event in a no contest.
What was also infamous about this show was a number of video package hyping the debut of another outside wrestler, Ahmed Johnson, who had already debuted the previous week. Billy and Ahmed have not worked for the promotion since, and it is rumored that the entire writing team was sacked following the show, despite it being the highest rated programme in the networks history.
It is clear that Parts Unknown Wrestling had a very turbulent past, more of which we will find out about in the future, but today it has a much more focused product, that focus being on all of its talented young stars. Wrestlers are trained by former 3 time Heavyweight champion The Sarge in the Parts Unknown Dojo, then graduate to the developmental facility the Parts Unknown Boot Camp, and those who are considered good enough then graduate to the main roster.
Things are about to get very interesting for this company now that it is a member of the NWA. The additional money and exposure means we will likely see considerably more appearances from outside wrestlers, potentially even some of the NWA champions, and we may also see Parts Unknown wrestlers venturing outside of Parts Unknown onto other promotions shows or even onto supercards.
Make sure to stay tuned to Parts Unknown Wrestling TV, and we will hope to have many more looks back at the past of this promotion in the future.
