NWA Hybrid Pro Sunrise Cup 08/08/2012
Welcome to the Sunrise Cup for August. Tonight, 8 competitors will compete in a 1 night tournament, with the winner getting a shot at the NWA Hybrid Pro Heavyweight Title. Here are the brackets for the tournament-
Without further ado, lets get straight into the action with the quarter finals.
Damien Sandow comes out to huge boos, and gets a microphone.
Sandow: I would take the time to give you unenlightened morons a proper welcome, but that would mean you would need to grasp the concept of courtesy, and your boos clearly show that you do not. Therefore all I have to say to you is greetings imbeciles.
The fans are really giving it to Sandow as per usual.
Sandow: Allow me to introduce you to the closest you will ever come to greatness that isn't named Damien Sandow. You see the former Harris Rotunda proved his true intelligence last week by dropping his deadweight loser of a brother to the canvas, and now he has shredded the remnants of his past, he has embraced a new persona. He has finally embraced his true self, and now he is ready to enlighten you all. Allow me to introduce to you all, Bray Wyatt! Your welcome!
Bray Wyatt comes out to boos, yet he shakes hands with some of the fans, waving to them and even with the referee. Yet we all know that after last week, you don't trust this man
Bray Wyatt w/Damien Sandow vs Evan Sydal
Wyatt offered Sydal a handshake, and Sydal refused, so Wyatt grabbed his hand, powered him to the canvas and forced him to shake it, then started beating the hell out of him with punches. Wyatt dominated much of this match with vicious strikes and power, but Sydal looked great in there to, dazzling the fans with his high flying moves. Sydal went up top to go for the Shooting Sydal Press, but Wyatt pushed the ref into the ropes and caused Sydal to get crotched and fall into the corner. Wyatt then hat a huge Splash Mountain in the corner, grabbed Sydal and kissed his forehead goodnight before dropping him with the STO to pin him for 3. What the hell is wrong with this guy?
Winner- Bray Wyatt
Brandon Bonham vs Johnny Gargano
Bonham is back in Hybrid Pro for the first time since being taken out by The Rotundas in the 2nd week of Hybrid Pro TV, and he wanted a win here badly to get his shot at revenge. However in Gargano he met a man who as he said in his promo is at a real career crossroads, nobody seems to know where his head is at. And this match showed that confliction, with at times the match being a technical classic with lots of great mat wrestling, while at others Gargano showed all his old cockiness and rule breaking. After a lot of back and forth, Gargano dropped Bonham with the Hurts Donut to advance to face Bray Wyatt. Bonham will have to wait for his shot at revenge.
Winner- Johnny Gargano
La Sombra vs Sami Callihan
Since Sombra's surprise defection to The Antichrists, he hasn't truly had a chance to shine, and this is what he had here, but thats not the way it went. Its clear that Cibernetico has gotten into Sombra's head to the extent that he almost isn't the same wrestler, gone are the flashy lucha moves, replaced with stalling and cheating at every opportunity. Callihan however had every means to counter Sombra's strategy, beating the hell out of him from bell to bell with stiff strikes, even ripping at his mask and busting him open much to the fans delight. Callihan setup for the Headlock Driver, but Cibernetico ran out, grabbed Callihan and dropped him with the Garra Cibernetica, causing the DQ and a win for Callihan.
Winner- Sami Callihan by DQ
Cibernetico lifted Sombra up by the throat, shouting something at him in Mexican, before throwing him across the ring and raising him arms as the spotlight shone on him. This relationship between Cibernetico and Sombra seems a little strange, almost as if Cibernetico is trying to teach Sombra what he is doing wrong and punishing his mistakes.
Mason Andrews vs Richie Steamboat
Andrews was still showing the after effects of the attack by Jon Moxley on Saturday, and this hurt him in a match against one of the best young wrestlers on the planet in Richie Steamboat. Steamboat looked crisp and quick out there, both on the mat and in the air, and while Andrews managed to go toe to toe with him for the majority of the match, his condition meant he simply didn't have the same sharpness as usual. It didn't play a big part in the finish to this one however: Steamboat went for a Cross Body, but Andrews avoided it and Steamboat accidentally hat the referee. Andrews then nailed the Ace of Spades, and covered but there was no ref, then JON MOXLEY COMES OUT OF THE CROWD! He grabs Andrews and drops him with a Piledriver, then lifts his head up and gives Andrews the finger gun. BONA YE! He then puts Steamboat on top of Andrews and revives the ref. 1-2-3!
Winner- Richie Steamboat
Moxley gets right back into the ring and pulls down his kneepad. BONA YE TO STEAMBOAT! I guess thats to prove Steamboat wasn't any part of this, he just wanted to screw Andrews out of a potential win. Moxley celebrates as a green spotlight appears on him, Cibernetico has to be very pleased with this.
The semi finals are as follows-
Wyatt and Gargano make their way out to the ring for their match, but Wyatt has something to say beforehand.
Wyatt: Hey, Johnny, my main man. I like you a lot pal, we're cool and life is good. So what do you say you step out of this match and let Bray Wyatt walk his way to victory, and keep your health. As if you don't I will have to beat you worse than anyone has ever done before in your pathetic existence! So lets be friends, you step aside and maybe we will share a drink after the show where I can tell you all your doing wrong, what do you say?
Gargano did not like that one bit, as Wyatt offers him a handshake, he slaps the taste out of Wyatt's mouth then start attacking to get this match underway.
Bray Wyatt vs Johnny Gargano
It Wyatt's plan was to get inside Gargano's head and make him angry, he did just that here, Gargano was fuming after being disrespected and Wyatt paid for that early on. Yet Wyatt with his stalling and mind games got back into it, controlling Gargano exactly as he did Sydal with power and hard hitting strikes. However one thing Wyatt wasn't banking on was the sudden arrival of his brother Bo Rotunda right as he had hat the Splash Mountain on Gargano. He leapt up on the apron distracting both Wyatt and the referee right as Wyatt had Gargano in place for the STO. With the ref distracted, Gargano snuck in a Low Blow and then dropped him with the Hurts Donut, as Rotunda leapt off the apron. Gargano covered Wyatt for the 3 count to advance to the final, as Bo has gotten some revenge on his brother for betraying him a few days ago.
Winner- Johnny Gargano
Sami Callihan vs Richie Steamboat
This match may very well have stolen the show, if only because it was one of the few matches without any cheating or outside interference, instead it was a great wrestling match between the talented technician Steamboat and the strong style brawler Callihan which had a bit of everything. You had Steamboat busting out some flashy high flying moves and some flashy submission holds, and Callihan throwing hard hitting strikes and dropping Steamboat with some high impact moves. In the end after lots of back and forth action, it was Callihan who advanced to the final, making Steamboat tap to the Stretch Muffler.
Winner- Sami Callihan
So the final will be Johnny Gargano vs Sami Callihan
In order to give the two a quick break, we get a video highlighting John Cena's injury at the hands of Shinsuke Nakamura a few weeks ago, in addition to how he is progressing in his recovery. Doctors have estimated that John Cena will return to the ring at the end of this month, and he has already indicated that he will be even more serious and focused than ever when he returns. Can Cena get his revenge on Nakamura and The Antichrists when he returns?
Johnny Gargano vs Sami Callihan
Before the match even begins, Cibernetico is out and takes a seat at ringside, looking to scout Johnny Gargano for The Antichrists possibly? Then Pinkie Sanchez comes out onto the ramp, and he to is going to watch this one. When the match got under way, it turned out to be a great final in the Sunrise Cup, with both men giving their all, yet with two other wrestlers at ringside it did makes things a little strange. Sanchez constantly shouted at Gargano to do the right thing, while Cibernetico encouraged Gargano's more underhanded tactics, and all these distractions lead to Callihan taking control with hard hitting moves, picking apart Gargano with ease. Cibernetico then leapt up on the apron to distract Callihan, but Sanchez ran down and pulled him off then the two started brawling at ringside. This distraction allowed Gargano to get back into the match, launching a big fight back, then managed to hit a Hurts Donut to get the 3 count, and win the Sunrise Cup!
Winner- Johnny Gargano
Gargano celebrates his big victory, and he has earned a shot at Cibernetico's Hybrid Pro Heavyweight Title anytime he wishes. Cibernetico and Sanchez both get into the ring, and Cibernetico then demands that Gargano surrender his title match, and that if he does, he can become his second in command in The Antichrists. Sanchez however tells Gargano not to listen, that The Antichrists is going to crash and burn exactly as The Revolution did and that he needs to come back to Newgen to follow the right path towards career redemption.
Gargano looks at both options, then GIVES THEM BOTH THE FINGER! He walks off, muttering that he won't be forced into anything and that if he joins he's doing whats best for Johnny Gargano.
Is Gargano going to go it alone? Or is he still planning on joining one of these two warring factions? What about his title match, when is he going to take his shot? Will he even take it if he joins The Antichrists? We will hopefully soon know where Gargano truly stands, maybe even this Saturday as it has just been announced that Newgen of Pinkie Sanchez, Kyle Matthews, Kota Ibushi, Rich Swann and Mason Andrews will face The Antichrists of Cibernetico, Shinsuke Nakamura, Jon Moxley, Jeff Hardy and La Sombra! See you on Saturday!
