Mickie Knuckles & Cherry Bomb vs. Cindy Rogers & Becky Bayless
This was a hot women's opener to get things rolling. While the match was not very long, the psychology of the team of Knuckles and Cherry Bomb was undeniable, as they cut off the ring for Becky Bayless and punished her, frustrating Cindy Rogers greatly. Cindy would catch a hot tag, though, and open things up with dropkicks and armdrags, even hitting a tope on Knuckles at one point. Bayless would end up winning the match for her team with a Backslide on Cherry Bomb, earning a tough victory.
Curt Hawkins vs. Roderick Strong
Hawkins had a size advantage here that he was able to use to over power Strong in the early going struggles, but Strong would use his chops and kicks to get things going in his direction. Both men would try to work the crowd with taunts and verbal abuse of their opponents, with the fans really responding to just how hard these two were hitting each other. In the end, these two would trade multiple near falls, as they did a roll-up exchange of pinning combinations, before Roderick would go on to nail the Sick Kick a second time in the match, which was enough to knock Hawkins out for the three count.
"The Russian Hooligan" Alex Koslov vs. Justin Gabriel[/b]
Great Lakes is full of extremely athletic individuals, and these two showed all of their grace and skillful technique in this contest. Things started off mat based, as they exchanged holds and reversals, until the striking came into play. Koslov was vicious with kicks and European uppercuts, before using his forearm and dragging it back and forth across Gabriel's face in the corner, mocking him and getting the fans to turn against him. Gabriel would show his poise, flipping onto his feet after a hip toss attempt and using a some quick kicks and a huracanrana to change the tide. Koslov would flip over a Back Body Drop attempt, nailling a Spinning Leg Lariat, followed by a big Scoop Slam, and then it was his theatrical stomping attack to the seated Gabriel that got the fans going; Koslov does a traditional Russian dance, putting boots to Gabriel's head every time to his crouches down, his big furry hat in place, before running off of the ropes and putting the boots to Gabriel's face, and getting a two count. Koslov would attempt to nail his Red Scare, but Gabriel was wise to it, and reversed it with lightning speed into a Crucifix Pin attempt, which earned him the three count, much to Koslov's dismay!
Koslov was livid after the contest and attacked Gabriel from behind, putting the boots to him and then locking on a Crossface hold, yanking him back and forth with ruthless aggression, before officials poured out and broke things up. The fans were booing, as Koslov smiled, pleased with his handy work.
"The Master of the Dark Hadou" Kenny Omega vs. Trent Barreta[/b]
Barreta and Omega are both very popular with the fans, and have a great energy and charisma in the ring, so this was a very satisfying contest for everyone in attendance. Barreta would surprise Omega with his chain wrestling ability, leading Omega to offer a handshake, begging for mercy while holding his back, only to take the opportunity to pull Trent down into a Fujiwara Armbar, causing Barreta to get to the ropes! From there, it was all business, and these two tried to take each other's head off a number of times. Barreta would show his poise by sliding off of Omega's shoulders as he attempted Croyt's Wrath, rolling him up with a bridging Prawn Hold and getting the three count!
Omega was upset, kicking the ropes and pounding on the buckles, not able to believe he just lost in such a fashion. Barreta mocked him from the isle, walking backwards and smiling as he points to his head, indicating he's just that much smarter than Kenny.
"The Perfect Weapon" Delirious vs. Tyler Black[/b]
Delirious is a hard opponent to plan for, as he's just so talented and versatile, and, well, he's insane. Black, however, seemed up to the challenge and brought his own set of tricks to the table, using his agility and speed to really try to counter the wild technique of Delirious, who was coming at him with a major purpose. Black would manage to catch Delirious mid-Shadows Over Hell with a Gamenjiri style to kick to the head, which looked like it probably knocked him out, but went on to nail God's Last Gift to ensure the three count in his first singles win.
Sonjay Dutt vs. "The Man That Gravity Forgot" PAC vs. Matt Sydal
PAC is a near peerless specimen, and even though he's fallen on some rather hard times as out late, he seemed very driven in this match to turn things around for himself. Sonjay Dutt has carved out a nice niche as a tag team wrestler, but did a great job of keeping up with the pace in this match and hitting some a big twisting dive to the outside and some quick reversals to get the fans cheering for him. Matt Sydal has a lot of upside and well rounded skills, but his heart is what shown through here, as he took some of the best moves of both of his opponents and always managed to get his shoulder up. PAC is just a cardio freak, and looked to be the best for wear by the end of the match, and it was a Phoenix Splash from the second turnbuckle onto Dutt that earned him the three count and a very satisfying win.
"The American Wolf" Davey Richards vs. "The Contract Killer" Rocky Romero[/b]
Davey Richards has yet to win a contest since coming to Great Lakes, while Rocky Romero just broke a small losing streak last week with a huge win over KENTA, so both men were really looking to do something here. Romero and Richards are former tag team partners, so they know each other very well, and Romero knew that he had superior speed and used it to give Richards a bit of a wrestling clinic early, chain wrestling him with quick, snappy holds, never sticking with one too long, as Richards is very solid on the mat and more powerful. Romero would attempt a knock out blow with a head kick, but Richards survived it and it seemed to really spark something in him. Richards would duck a flying knee attack and nail his Handspring Enzuigiri, followed by a big German Suplex for a two count to change the tides. These two would exchange kicks and strikes, with Richards blocking a kick to the gut with his elbows, and then hitting the Alarm Clock on Romero, followed by a Folding Powerbomb, which Romero kicked out of, but got instantly caught up into a Texas Cloverleaf hold. "The American Wolf" pulled back with all of his might, yelling out like a banshee, and Romero had no choice but to tap out before Richards snapped his ligaments. It was definitely a "live to fight another day" type of circumstance.
"That Young Knockout Kid" Chris Hero vs. "The Technical Messiah" Alex Shelley[/b]
These two have seemingly developed a rival, as this is their second singles outing and third match in a row, and the last two were both very competitive, so the fans knew they were going to get a good show tonight. Hero came out of the box looking to break Shelley's will by attacking his pride, going for a different strategy than he's utilized lately and taking a technical approach, finishing a quick back and forth exchange with his fabled cravate! Shelley was able to turn things over with some quick kicks, followed by an armdrag takedown and then a grounded headscissors, which lead to more technical wrestling exchanges. Shelley would pull out some unusual holds, really trying to break down the larger Hero, before locking on his Border City Stretch, but Hero was able to escape two attempts at that and locked on his own submission finisher, The Hangman's Clutch, which Shelley as able to get to the ropes to break. Hero would go on to catch a quick Enzuigiri from Shelley, who wanted to go for the ShellShock, but Hero reversed in, catching Shelley with a knee and then delivering a Ripcord Rolling Elbow! Shelley as stunned on a knee, looking like he could fall, but Hero held onto his hair and pulled him up into a Hangman's Clutch Facebuster! From there, Hero locked on the Hangman's Clutch II, really wrenching back, and Shelley had no choice but to tap out!
Hero laughed maniacally as he went to the back, as Shelley held his neck and looked like he was trying to burn holes through Hero with his fiery glare. I have a feeling this rivalry isn't over yet, as Shelley's claim to technical wrestling superiority has been put to dispute.
"The Notorious 187" Homicide vs. BJ Whitmer
Homicide used his West Brooklyn Lariat to knock out BJ Whitmer in a tag team match last week, so Whitmer was looking to get a little revenge this week. Homicide and Whitmer had a very physical contest, as this was mostly a brutal sort of brawl, here both men were looking to knock the wind out of their opponent and keep them down, whether it be with chops, kicks, lariats, or suplexes. They both even showed their ability to soar through the air, as Whitmer would send Homicide to the outside with a dropkick and nail a Pescado, while Homicide would take control on the outside, knocking Whitmer down with a T-Bone Suplex, and then nailed a Tope con Hilo to the delight of the audience! In the end, Whitmer would reverse Homicide's attempt at another West Brooklyn Lariat by ducking and pulling him into a Reverse STO, before rolling and then applying his dreaded Peruvian Necktie, which was enough to make Homicide fall unconscious and gain Whitmer the very hard fought victory!
Whitmer would grab the microphone afterwards and say that whether you love him or hate him, everybody in that locker room and in the wrestling world needs to respect him! He says he's tired of Jimmy Jacobs getting all of the accolades, and he's damn tired of everyone thinking Bobby Fish is so damn great, and says he doesn't care which one of them sons of bitches are holding the Great Lakes title, one way or another, he's going to take it!
"The Warrior" Low Ki vs. Amazing Red
These two have had many storied matches, having brought each other up in their early careers with many great matches, and it was time to rekindle that here in Dayton. Red had been tearing up the tag team rankings and reminding everyone of how great he is, while Low Ki is just starting to find his groove here in Great Lakes, and this match was one both hoped would really put them on the map in singles competition. Red was on fire early, taking Low Ki down with quick attacks and evading his strikes, but Ki would catch Red flying off the ropes with big jumping knee strike, followed by a downward sort of reverse axe kick to the back of the head. Ki would go on to send downward elbows into the head of a corner Red, the fans counting to ten, but Red manage to slip out from under him and nail an amazing Super Prawn Hold Driver from the middle turnbuckle, getting him a two count! Red would then hit some quick kicks, only to get caught with a Koppou Kick from Ki, which took him down for a two count. Ki would chop and kick Red before sending him off the ropes. Ki would make the mistake of ducking, which allowed Red to counter and nail the Code Red, only for a two count! Red would then hit a Huracanrana Driver to a kneeling Ki, following that up with the Red Star Press, but Ki still kicked out! Ki would counter Red as he was getting lifted to his feet with a knee to his gut, followed by Kawada Kicks to his face. Ki would attempt a Ki Krusher, but Red escaped and tried for a German Suplex, but Ki landed on his feet and delivered a BRUTAL John Woo kick that sent Red flying into the buckles! Ki attempted a Warrior's Way, but Red rolled out of the way and then hit a Twisting Roundhouse Kick! Red went up top, looking for the Infra Red, but Ki was back up and hit the ropes, crotching Red on top as he faced the crowd. Ki put Red into the Tree of Woe position and everyone knew what was coming.... HANGING WARRIOR'S WAY! From there, Ki picked up Red, using a throat slash taunt that got the crowd pumped, before delivering the final blow... the KI KRUSHER! That was enough to get the three count, as the fans gave both men a huge standing ovation!
Low Ki and Red both proved why they are two of the best at what they do, giving the fans yet another match of their's to talk about for years to come.
"The Round Eye Samurai" Bobby Fish & "Classic" Colt Cabana vs. Ricochet & Jimmy Jacobs
This was not a very great match, as the styles and teams weren't very cohesive, but they still managed to keep the crowd decently entertained. This was a match putting four of the biggest stars of Great Lakes together in one, but it sagged in some areas. Cabana botched a Quebrada attempt at one point, and Ricochet landed pretty bad on a dive that took him out for the rest of the match, pretty much, and that sort of caused these guys to have to cut this thing short. Jacobs managed to roll-up Cabana, holding the tights as he did so, and celebrated as Fish and Cabana both looked frustrated.
Ricochet hobbled out behind Jacobs, as Jacobs yelled about doing anything to win and getting his belt back!
Spanky vs. "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels
The fans were really hot for this, as both wrestlers did a good job during their entrances to really build the tension: Daniels would come out very intense and did a lot of trash talking as he went around the ringside area, slapping hands and then hopping up on the apron to pose, every vein in his body practically popping out, as his eyes burned with desire; Spanky looked pretty intense, his eyes bulging out and he too would do his own smack talking about Daniels, doing his odd routine of halfway dancing and bobbing around, before sliding into the ring and crawling on the mat, laying on his side as the bell sounded and goading Daniels to come after him, before rolling out of the ring.
Daniels would follow Spanky out, and Spanky would hop back and forth, sort of toying with him like he was a sort of Matador before rolling in. Daniels rolled in nearly simultaneously and these two began to chain wrestle, Daniels trying to keep Spanky down, but Spanky always seeming to have a quick answer, and eventually, he was able to get Daniels into an arm wringer. From there, Daniels rolled from and sent a boot into Spanky's face, and took the momentum back in his direction, kicking and stomping him in the corner before whipping him across the ring and smashing him with a high knee! Spanky would fight back, catching Daniels with a quick Backslide, which he released and then sent a knee of his own into Daniels face, taking him down for a two count. Spanky would apply a headscissors, which Daniels escaped and turned into an STF, causing Spanky to have to go to the ropes. Daniels would go on the attack, but Spanky caught him with a thumb to the eyes, followed by a chop block, and then he paraded around the ring, very proud of himself. Spanky would light up Daniels with some chops, before whipping him and catching him with a Leg Lariat, but still just a two count. From there, Spanky locked on a sort of Crossface hold, trying to force Daniels to tap, but Daniels turned it into a hammerlock, which he proceeded to drop multiple knees onto, trying to snap the shoulder ligaments.
Spanky would fight back with elbows to the gut, followed by inside elbows, but Daniels would nail him with a knee and then come off the ropes with a big STO! Spanky would kick out of a pin attempt, but "The Fallen Angel" would lock him up into a torturous grounded Abdominal Stretch, grinding his elbow the side of Spanky's face, goading him to tap. Spanky would escape, sending his left shin into Daniels face, before utilizing multiple pinning combination attempts, and then hitting a nice Huracanrana. Spanky would try to fly into the corner after Daniels, but Daniels would move and run off the ropes, flying and catching him with a boot across the face! Daniels would then put Spanky on the top turnbuckle, jumping and connecting with a HARD Palm Strike, before nailing his Fall From Grace, but still just a two count! Daniels would pick up Spanky, looking for the Angel's Wings, but Spanky escaped and took him down with a Cross Armbar! Daniels would try roll it over, but Spanky would actually twist and take him down face first to the mat, having Daniels arm trapped almost like a LeBell Lock, but pulling Daniels over and locking in a modified Rings of Saturn! Daniels looked to be in absolute agony, but managed to get to the ropes for the break.
Spanky would attempt his Sliced Bread #2, but Daniels held the ropes and reversed it. Spanky would storm in, but Daniels reversed and sent him face first into the buckles with a Reverse STO! Spanky would stumble out of the corner, as Daniels had recouperated, and walked with into a Death Valley Driver from Daniels! Daniels hooked the leg, but still just a two count! Daniels is livid, jumping up and instructing the referee how to make the count, but this allowed Spanky a little recovery time and he used to catch Daniels with a drop toe hold, followed by a sort of Butterfly Roll-Up, but just a two count came of it, as Daniels tries to shake off the shock! Spanky goes on the offensive with shoot kicks, before running off of the ropes. Daniels ducks a clothesline and then tries for another Reverse STO, but Spanky elbows his way out of it and grabs Daniels by the head, attempting the Sliced Bread #2 again... AND HE NAILS IT! Spanky hooks the leg, thinking he has it, but NO! Daniels kicks out of again, as the fans cheer wildly!
Spanky calls for the end, trying to lock on his Cobra Clutch, but Daniels reverses it into a hammerlock and twists Spanky over, catching him with and grabbing his arms... ANGEL'S WINGS! Daniels hooks the leg hard, thinking he's got it for sure, but NO! Spanky kicks out this time, and the fans can't believe it! Daniels picks up Spanky off of the mat, beside himself after that shocking turn, but Spanky sends quick fists into his stomach, followed by a Step Up Enzuigiri! Spanky attempts another Sliced Bread #2, but Daniels drops to a knee and stops it. Spanky turns, trying to grab him, but Daniels ducks under and grabs him... REVERSE STO! He twists and has it locked in... KOJI CLUTCH!
Spanky knows he has limited time before he passes out here, so he begins pushing at Daniels leg, before rolling and putting his shoulders to the mat, getting a two before Daniels rolls. He tries again, getting a one count, before maneuvering himself and actually breaking the hold! Daniels scrambles, but is getting blasted with knees and kicks! Soanky locks on a Guillotine Choke, trying to pull Daniels down, jumping on him as he's standing, but Daniels manages to walk over and hook his arm on the ropes to break it. Spanky chops and kicks his chest, before attempting to lock on the Cobra Clutch again, but as he applies it, Daniels is still walking and before Spanky can jump on him and try to take him down, Daniels jumps and propels himself off of the buckles and backwards... Spanky still has the hold applied, as Daniels sends them both backward... Spanky is on his back, as Daniels is rolled up on top of him, and the referee counts... Spanky is stuck, as Daniels has a hold of his arms now, and THE REFEREE COUNTS TO THREE!
DANIELS HAS DONE IT!
Daniels utilizes that Cobra Clutch counter, pinning Spanky's shoulders to the mat, and it's all over! Daniels has ended Spanky's winning streak by out smarting the overzealous competitor! Spanky can't believe it, pulling at his hair and then slamming his fists on the mat, as Daniels taunts him from the isle! The fans are going crazy, chanting for and applauding both men's masterful efforts, but Daniels just had one too many tricks up his sleeve tonight, and that just skyrocketed him up the rankings around here after a stellar main event.
