NEXT: Scramble Tag Cup Results[/u]
NEXT Owner Magnus D came out to start the show, and made several announcements about tonight's tournament. Firstly, all matches will take place under elimination rules, to avoid wrestlers attacking their partners since it'll put them in a handicap situation. Secondly, any wrestler who walks out on their partner or deliberately gets themselves DQ'ed will be suspended indefinitely. Finally, the winner of this tournament will get a shot at their choice of NWA World Titles next week with NEXT.
Here are the 1st round matches again for your reference-
Katsuhiko Nakajima and Damien Sandow def Bray Wyatt and La Sombra. Wyatt and Sombra had a certain level of chemistry as a team, if only because with both having been on the dark side of things in Hybrid Pro, they had an understanding. Sandow and Nakajima did not, with Nakajima not approving of Sandow's cheap tactics. Nakajima went first when Sandow "accidentally" hat him with a Clothesline and Wyatt squashed him with a Senton. Sandow then quickly nailed Sombra with brass knuckles to eliminate him, leaving Sandow versus his former pupil Wyatt. The two had a fun battle before Sandow out of nowhere hat the Terminus to pin Wyatt.
Zema Ion is out first for the next first round tag match, and gets a microphone. He says that until a few days ago he had an awesome partner, that being Rocky Romero, a seasoned pro. Then he got released and now his partner is a loser nobody called Mike Sydal. He says that Sydal can go to hell, he doesn't need a partner and will win this tournament on his own. Sydal comes out regardless and the match gets underway.
Sami Callihan and Alex Shelley def Mike Sydal and Zema Ion. Ion refused to let Sydal in the match at all, ignoring his tags, and almost paid the price by taking a Shellshock from Shelley which Sydal broke up. Sydal tagged himself in then scored a massive upset by pinning Callihan after a picture perfect Moonsault. Ion was annoyed, and shouted down Sydal, who had enough and punched Ion's lights out, allowing Shelley to make him tap to the Border City Stretch. Ion then grabbed Sydal's foot on the way out, tripping him, and Shelley took full advantage with a Shellshock to pin Sydal.
Harry Smith and Uhaa Nation def Kyle Matthews and Chuck Taylor in a pretty one sided match, and for obvious reasons. Firstly, Smith and Nation both had a big height and power advantage, and secondly Matthews and Taylor hate each other after Matthews nearly snapped Taylor's arm in Hybrid Pro. Matthews and Taylor simply couldn't co-exist, and Matthews walked out, getting himself counted out and shouting "go on, suspend me Magnus, you know you can't afford to lose me!". Taylor was then easy pickings for the two big men, with Nation hitting the All Out Assault to get the 3 count.
Samuray Del Sol and ACH scored a big upset by defeating Adam Cole and Kota Ibushi in a great match, the best of the night so far. We saw a lot of great aerial moves here, especially from Ibushi who was here to impress. Cole was pinned first following a Dragon Fly by ACH. Ibushi then pinned ACH after a massive Phoenix Splash from the top rope. Finally Del Sol got the biggest pinfall of his career so far following the Hara-Kiri. All 4 men shook hands after the match.
In a competitive and intense match, Kyle O'Reilly and Eddie Kingston def Luke Gallows and Tyler Black. Black went down first of all when Kingston knocked him out with a Backfist to the Future. Kingston went down next after a Gallows Pole from Gallows. O'Reilly then made Gallows tap to the Anklelock.
Rich Swann and Trent Barreta def Bo Dallas and Richie Steamboat. At first this seemed like an almost formulaic match for Dallas and Steamboat, with them being in total control early on, and eliminating Swann following a Cross Body off the top by Steamboat. However Kyle Matthews then decided to get involved, firstly coming out onto the ramp and causing a distraction that saw Dallas rolled up and pinned by Barreta. Then he ran down and Slurpee Kicked Steamboat, which saw Barreta cover him for the 1-2-3. The Matthews/Steamboat rivalry is definitely heating up!
Cody Rhodes and Curt Hawkins def Chris Sabin and Zack Sabre Jr in a very solid matchup. Hawkins was the first to be eliminated, as Sabin pinned him with the Cradle Shock. However straight after Rhodes grabbed a rollup with the trunks to instantly eliminate Sabin. Rhodes and Sabre Jr battled back and forth for a good 5 minutes, before Rhodes nailed the Cross Rhodes to pin him clean and advance.
Ricochet and Jack Swagger def Kenny Omega and Michael Elgin in an excellent match, the best of the first round. Swagger looks more focused than ever after his mistakes last week, and matched power with Elgin, while Omega and Ricochet had some tremendous high flying exchanges that wowed the crowd. Ricochet got isolated for a while before making a hot tag to Swagger, who destroyed both of his opponents. He then pinned Elgin with the Doctor Bomb. Ricochet then came off the top with a Shooting Star Press that was enough to pin Omega.
The quarter finals are as follows-
Against the odds, despite having only wrestled a few minutes earlier, Ricochet and Jack Swagger def Sami Callihan and Alex Shelley to advance to the semi finals. Swagger and Ricochet worked fast, with Swagger knocking Shelley out of the ring and the two 2 on 1 focusing on Callihan, with Swagger pinning Callihan with a Doctor Bomb. Shelley fought back against his own odds, and subsequently pinned Swagger after a Shell Shock, leaving Shelley against the former World Junior Heavyweight Champion. Shelley dished out a big beating to Ricochet, but Ricochet fought back again, and after a 630 Senton managed to pin Shelley and advance.
Kyle O'Reilly and Eddie Kingston def Rich Swann and Trent Barreta. O'Reilly and Kingston have some definite chemistry that is becoming apparent, with their intense, hard hitting styles meshing well together. They used this to eliminate Swann as Kingston backfisted him right into an Anklelock by O'Reilly to make him tap. Kingston then got pinned by Barreta after a Gobstopper, leaving Barreta and O'Reilly one on one. O'Reilly managed to get that Anklelock locked again and make Barreta tap out.
Despite their continued lack of cohesion, Katsuhiko Nakajima and Damien Sandow def Samuray Del Sol and ACH to advance to the semi finals. The match went pretty similar to their previous one, with Sandow again "accidentally" hitting Nakajima, this time with a chain, which caused him to get pinned by ACH's Best 450 Ever. However Sandow also used that chain on both of his opponents as Nakajima tried to argue with the ref and get the chain taken away from Sandow. Sandow pinned ACH, before hitting the Terminus on Del Sol and pinning him to.
Harry Smith and Uhaa Nation def Cody Rhodes and Curt Hawkins. Smith and Nation continue to be awesome together, their powerful approach combined with their wrestling skill makes them a match for anyone, and they definitely took the fight to Rhodes and Hawkins. Hawkins was first to go as Smith dropped him with a Running Powerslam following a devastating Clothesline from Nation. Nation was next to be pinned however when Rhodes nailed the Beautiful Disaster. Smith and Rhodes had a great back and forth for a few minutes, before Smith dropped Rhodes with a big Saito Suplex, then locked in the Sharpshooter to make Rhodes tap out.
The semi finals will be as follows-
Ricochet and Jack Swagger def Katsuhiko Nakajima and Damien Sandow, who finally fell totally apart after two matches where they somehow advanced. It looked good early on however, as the two had appeared to patch up their differences and were working better together. Indeed Nakajima got the first fall by pinning Ricochet after a German Suplex. Thats when things started to crumble. Sandow got his chain out again and started smacking Swagger with it, and Nakajima finally got the referee to look at what Sandow was doing. The referee instantly disqualified him and Sandow was furious. He nailed Nakajima with the chain and left, which made his easy pickings for Swagger. One Doctor Bomb later and Swagger and Ricochet were through to the final.
In an all out war of a match, Harry Smith and Uhaa Nation def Kyle O'Reilly and Eddie Kingston. When you had the most powerful team in the tournament battle the most intense, you know your in for something hard hitting, and this was in every respect, with Kingston and O'Reilly's strikes battling the all out power of Smith and Nation. Combine it with some good mat wrestling and this was a ton of fun to watch. Kingston fell first when Nation hat the All Out Assault to pin him. O'Reilly did his best, but against two massive men he didn't stand much of a chance. He got pinned after a Running Powerslam from Smith.
So that means our final will see Ricochet and Jack Swagger take on Harry Smith and Uhaa Nation! Remember, the winner will then compete in a one on one match, with the winner of that match getting an NWA World Title match of their choosing next week on NEXT.
Johnny Gargano def AR Fox to retain the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title in another fantastic title defence by Gargano. Fox was a tough challenger for Gargano, his aerial skill being very difficult to keep up with, so much like he did against Ibushi he went for a ground based approach, wearing down the challenger with submissions. It proved effective, yet Fox refused to stay down, and got some very near falls on the champion late on, with a Springboard Codebreaker being the closest: had Gargano not gotten the ropes we'd have a new champion. Gargano recovered however and nailed the Hurts Donut to retain the title.
In a great final to the tournament, Ricochet and Jack Swagger def Harry Smith and Uhaa Nation to win the tournament. Smith and Nation finally had a proper challenge with Swagger being more than a match for them in the power department. Swagger got the first elimination by getting that Doctor Bomb on Nation, with Ricochet diving onto Smith to keep him from breaking up the cover. Smith fought hard though, and used that power and wrestling skill to eliminate Ricochet. A Saito Suplex followed by the Sharpshooter saw him tap out. Swagger and Smith's exchanges were intense, but Swagger came out on top. Smith then snuck in a Sharpshooter, but Swagger reversed to the Anklelock. Smith did all he could to escape, but was forced to tap!
After our NWA World Title match, Ricochet and Jack Swagger will go one on one to decide the winner of the Tag Scramble Cup!
By means of disqualification, Drew McIntyre def Alberto Del Rio, with Del Rio retaining his title as a result. There were heated words between these two earlier in the week, with Del Rio telling McIntyre to just give up before he starts, and McIntyre fuming as Del Rio questioning his commitment to being the best in the NWA. Del Rio was in control for a fair portion of this, but the crowd were behind the scot, and he fought back time and time again. Indeed towards the end a real fire was lit inside, and he showed intensity and determination that we have never seen from him before. Del Rio was begging for mercy at one point, but McIntyre did not let up. Del Rio escaped when McIntyre nailed the Future Shock, and grabbed a chair. He smashed McIntyre over the head with it, and got himself disqualified to save his title.
Del Rio repeatedly hat McIntyre with the chair, bloodying him, before grabbing the arm and locking in the Cross Armbreaker. Del Rio finally lets go as McIntyre is knocked out on the canvas, and Del Rio smugly poses with his belt as the fans boo. Drew McIntyre may not be the champion, but he showed a lot here, and didn't deserve the kind of beating he just took.
Jack Swagger def Ricochet to win the Tag Scramble Cup, effectively redeeming himself for his mistakes last week. Swagger may have had the power and wrestling advantage, but Ricochet had the speed and took Swagger down with a whole host of aerial manoeuvres that wowed the fans, which he has been doing all night. Both men were tired and this went a little under 10 minutes before Swagger overpowered Ricochet with a German Suplex, picked him up and nailed the Doctor Bomb to get that pinfall win.
The rest of The Revolution come out to celebrate with Swagger as he holds the cup aloft. Swagger then says that next week, he is challenging Alberto Del Rio for the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Will Swagger do what Drew McIntyre failed to do and win the big one? Or will Del Rio show that vicious streak to retain again?
Also next week, Kyle Matthews goes one on one with Richie Steamboat, Zema Ion and Mike Sydal face off, Katsuhiko Nakajima takes on Damien Sandow, AR Fox faces Trent Barreta in the first ever Instant Replay Match, and Johnny Gargano defend the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title against the Scramble Cup runner up and former champion, Ricochet! Goodnight everybody, see you next week!
