NEXT 5: Matthews vs Gargano
John Laurinaitis is out to start the show, with a big announcement to make.
Laurinaitis: Over the past 4 NEXT shows, we've seen a lot of healthy competition between talented young athletes. Some new stars have emerged, while others who maybe thought they were bigger than they are have been cut down to size. Now its time to find out who amongst our many stars is the standout. NEXT is going to crown its first champion with a new, innovative title. Based upon a similar concept to the Rising Sun Grand Championship, every wrestler in the promotion is competing for the title, and will be eliminated when they lose a match. The difference here is, every single match in NEXT from the start of next week is a tournament match, whether a regular singles match, a tag match or multi man match, with the man who is pinned being the only one eliminated. We look forward to crowning our first champion, and we will be inviting every young wrestler in the NWA to compete.
Huge announcement here, starting next week the road to the Standout Crown begins. Who will the champion be?
The two newest NEXT stars opened the show, as Jay Lethal took on Mike Bennett. Both men looked really good in there, with Lethal showing impressive wrestling skill, and Bennett matching it with some rule breaking in there to. In the end Lethal got the pinfall by hitting the Lethal Injection.
Post match Bennett attacked Lethal, and dropped him with the Box Office Smash, saying that he will defeat Lethal next week on his road to the Standout Crown.
Zema Ion was looking for revenge, facing off with Mike Sydal for the second time after Sydal embarrassed him at NEXT 3. Sydal again looked great in there and Ion struggled to keep pace at times, though showed his own high flying and wrestling skill to. Ion's problem again was that he was too cocky and overconfident, believing he was above Sydal, and this constantly allowed Sydal a path back into the match. Ion went up top and ended up missing a 450 Splash by taking far too long to hit it, then Sydal kicked up, nailed an Explosion Moonsault and pinned Ion for a second match in a row!
Sydal heads up the ramp celebrating, as Ion grabs the mic.
Ion: Sydal, you've embarrassed me yet again with your flukes. Well this is the last time. I want you in this ring again next week, this time in a 2 out of 3 falls match. And if I don't beat you this time, I'll never wrestle in a NEXT ring again!
Sydal nods to accept, and the match is set for next week. Will Ion finally pin Sydal, or will his NEXT career be over?
We had a battle of junior heavyweights next, as Tyler Black and Trent Barreta went one on one. And it was certainly an exciting matchup, if a bit short at a little over 8 minutes. However what we got was good, as we saw a great mix of mat wrestling and high flying action between these two men. Black used God's Last Gift to pin Barreta and get back on track after his loss to Johnny Gargano last week.
In a grudge match from last week, Damien Sandow took on Ricochet one on one. Ricochet was cost his match with Katsuhiko Nakajima after Sandow botched interference against Nakajima. Ricochet went on an all out attack with aerial moves, while Sandow used his size advantage and ring smarts to keep Ricochet on the canvas. Katsuhiko Nakajima came down the ramp to shout at Sandow, and as Sandow looked on, Ricochet nailed a Reverse Hurricanrana followed by a 450 Splash to score a huge win!
Sandow was not pleased, he grabbed Ricochet before he could even celebrate and dropped him with a Terminus. Sandow then said that he wants Nakajima in a singles match where he can enlighten us all with a victory for America. Your welcome!
To continue its innovation, NEXT had its first ever 5 team scramble tag match, with the winners taking on the World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes next week on NEXT. The teams competing were The Motor City Machine Guns, The Revolution, The Token Black Team, Aerial Assault (Samuray Del Sol and AR Fox) and Fusion (Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi). It was utter chaos as you would expect, especially with scramble rules in effect, there was not a single wasted second as everyone went all out to impress. In the end, Fusion got the title shot when they hat the Golden Shower onto both Motor City Machine Guns to continue their losing streak.
Afterwards, The Motor City Machine Guns got on the microphone. They said that this losing streak needs to end and it needs to end soon. Thats why if they lose their tag match next week, they will split up permanently!
Harry Smith was up next in a single matchup with the leader of The Family, Bray Wyatt. The Family were at ringside, and their constant interference made life very difficult for Smith, who had the power and size of Wyatt to deal with in addition to them. Smith finally mounted a comeback, fighting off the interference and getting his hands on Wyatt, dropping him with a big Running Powerslam before going for the Sharpshooter. Curt Hawkins then blatantly smashed a chair over the head of Smith leading to an instant DQ, and a win for Smith.
The Family gave a 4 on 1 beatdown to Smith post match, before celebrating. Smith needs some allies if he's going to be able to take down The Family. Who could he find to help him out?
In the semi-main event, the number one contendership in NEXT to the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title was decided, as Richie Steamboat battled with Chuck Taylor. Taylor's arm was heavily bandaged, and its stunning that he's been able to get in the ring at all, but he's a fighter and continues to battle on through injury. It was however a gaping target for Steamboat, who worked on that arm and had Taylor helpless at times. Taylor battled hard though, he got a few of his signature moves in and got Steamboat down for some close near falls. In the end however, Steamboat won the matchup, hitting the Sling Blade to pin him and become the number one contender.
Steamboat will be able to name the time and place that he faced Gargano, so we can expect an announcement soon.
Drew McIntyre came out to a standing ovation from the fans. McIntyre suffered a mild concussion last week and was told to take the week off. He however has something to say.
McIntyre: Thanks for all the support over the past few weeks, your the best!
The fans cheer and chant "McIntyre"
McIntyre: Alberto Del Rio, last week you may have won the match, but you didn't pin me or make me tap, you had to make me pass out. In other words Del Rio, you weren't able to beat me 1-2-3 in the middle of this ring. However, maybe I'm not ready to defeat you just yet, I need more time to prove myself and prove to myself that I can beat you when it counts. Thats why I'm going to make a proposition. The NWA recently announced that it is going to have a tournament to crown a North American champion. I don't have any backstage pull nor any real say in who represents NEXT in that tournament, nor do I want to hurt anyone else's chances, but if you want someone who will represent this company with honour and respect, then put me in the tournament. If you do, I promise I won't let you down!
McIntyre throws down the microphone and leaves. Will he be picked by NEXT when the time comes?
And so we finally reach the main event, as Kyle Matthews and World Junior and East Coast X Champion Johnny Gargano step in the ring one on one to try and settle their long standing rivalry. And what an utterly epic match it turned out to be, matching the hype and then some. It started with a slow feeling out process on the mat, with these two being experts at their craft on the canvas, and it was 50/50 all the way. Then fists started to fly, and the match really got under way, with the hatred between these two becoming even more evident as they tried to destroy each other. Matthews tried to rip Gargano's arm out of its socket with submissions, trying to end the career of Gargano, while Gargano targeted the back, setting up for a Crosston Crab perhaps. Matthews was first to make a critical mistake, missing a Slurpee Kick, with Gargano then dropping him with a Release German Suplex which was then followed up with the Crosston Crab. Matthews was in the hold for a good 15-20 seconds, before making it to the ropes. Gargano called for the Hurts Donut, AND NAILS IT! 1-2-NO, Matthews kicks out! Nobody has kicked out of the Hurts Donut, and credit must be given to Matthews for that.
Gargano looks frustrated, but goes for another, ONLY FOR MATTHEWS TO LOCK THE HIDAKA LOCK! Gargano manages to escape, making the ropes, but the damage may be done to that already worked over arm. Matthews then nails the Slurpee Kick! 1-2-NO, Gargano escapes this time. Matthews is readying Gargano for another Hidaka Lock, BUT GARGANO REVERSES, HURTS DONUT! The arm is too injured for Gargano to make the cover though and both men are down, as Matthews calls the ref to say he might have an injured neck. AND HERE COMES JACK SWAGGER! He grabs Gargano, DOCTOR BOMB! Matthews crawls over to Gargano, not like this! 1-2-NO, GARGANO KICKS OUT AGAIN! Matthews is screaming at Gargano to "just die already!"
Matthews picks up Gargano, HURTS DONUT BY GARGANO! Gargano is again too injured to capitalise, and Matthews somehow makes it up first. HIDAKA LOCK! Gargano tries to make the ropes, but Matthews pulls him back into the centre of the ring and relocks the hold. Gargano holds on for as long as he can, but he has a title reign to think of, he'd have to forfeit the title if he got injured. HE TAPS, KYLE MATTHEWS JUST MADE THE WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TAP!
Matthews however isn't celebrating, he's keeping the hold locked, he's trying to end Gargano's career right here. Swagger is back in and stomping Gargano, this isn't right. HERE COMES CHUCK TAYLOR WITH A PIPE, INJURED ARM AND ALL! He smacks Swagger in the back of the head with it, but Matthews releases Gargano and throws himself at Taylor's injured arm, sending Taylor to the canvas. HE PUTS TAYLOR IN THE HIDAKA LOCK! Taylor screams as he writhes on the canvas in agony, as Matthews wants to snap that arm off. Gargano makes it up and grabs the pipe, finally chasing Matthews out of the ring, closely followed by Swagger. Taylor sacrificed himself so that Gargano could fight another day!
John Laurinaitis then comes out onto the ramp.
Laurinaitis: Now I'm sure everyone agrees that was a great match, however no scores were settled, and new ones are opening. Thats why, injury permitting, I'm going to setup a big tag team main event for next weeks show. It will be Kyle Matthews and Jack Swagger taking on Johnny Gargano and Chuck Taylor of The Revolution!
What a huge matchup that is going to be, another unmissable main event. See you next week folks!
