NEXT 6: Tag Warfare[/u]
(Note that all matches tonight are tournament matches for the Standout Crown)
Mike Bennett is out to start the show. He says that he was meant to wrestle Jay Lethal in a rematch from last week tonight, but Lethal chickened out, knowing he wouldn't beat a true wrestling superstar like him. He challenges anyone in the locker room to face him tonight. That challenge is answered by Tommaso Ciampa, the newest NEXT signing, leading to the opening match.
Bennett and Ciampa had an interesting match. Ciampa's power was impressive, he looked a dominant force in there as Bennett couldn't match him in that regard. So Bennett had to get more sneaky, bending the rules in his favour and using any tricks he could to try and get an advantage. Bennett's ego was on full display here, as he constantly played to the fans, and lost focus, allowing Ciampa to control things again. Bennett got a rollup out of nowhere, grabbed the trunks and that got Bennett a tainted win to have him advance in the tournament.
A 3 way tag match was put in place to decide another set of challengers for The Briscoes and their World Tag Team Titles next week. The Motor City Machine Guns, who have vowed to split up if they lose tonight, took on The Token Black Team and Aerial Assault. The Machine Guns were definitely the more experienced team, but their lack of confidence showed and the two younger teams took full advantage of this with their aerial skill. However, finally the MCMG had luck on their side, as after an ASCS Rush, they pinned Swann and finally got their first win in NEXT.
The Revolution, Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly came out post match. They challenged The "Motor City Losers" to put their title shot on the line against them next week. Shelley accepted on their behalf, and said that it was The Revolution who were going to be losing out next week!
A six man tag was next up, as Harry Smith has found two unlikely allies to help him against The Family. Bray Wyatt supervised at ringside as Curt Hawkins, Luke Gallows and La Sombra battled Harry Smith, Trent Barreta and Ricochet. The Family were definitely a more cohesive unit, but Smith's power and the high flying skill of Ricochet and Barreta were definitely a challenge for them to keep up with. Wyatt was in the end the deciding factor, as he distracted Smith, allowing Hawkins to hit him in the back with his cane, and pin him for the 3 count.
The Family celebrated post match, but not for long. Smith challenged Wyatt and Hawkins to a tag match next week, but didn't say who his partner would be. Wyatt accepted, then Smith announced that his partner would be none other than UHAA NATION! Wyatt and The Family looked scared as they have the Scramble Tag Cup finalists to deal with next week.
It was time for the 2/3 falls match between Zema Ion and Mike Sydal, with Ion vowing to leave NEXT if he loses to Sydal a third time. Ion didn't even let Sydal get in the ring properly before attacking him, starting the match in a hurry. He quickly hat a Gory Bomb, followed by the 450, and pinned Sydal not even a minute into the match. Ion took time to pose on all the turnbuckles, proclaiming that he already had this match in the bag. This was very foolish, as Sydal played possum, kicked up and took Ion off the turnbuckle with a Hurricanrana, then nailed the Explosion Moonsault to pin Ion and even it up. The final fall was a lot more even, as both men got near falls and it could have gone either way. Ion got a chain out of his trunks, only for the ref to see it and take it away. As the ref was putting it away, Ion kicked Sydal in the balls, and nailed the Phillipino Destroyer, which got Ion the win over Sydal he craved.
Ion nailed some stomps to Sydal post match, before telling Sydal he's worthless and will never truly match him in the squared circle. Sydal answered this by nipping up and taking Ion down with a Hurricanrana, sending Ion out of the ring fuming at Sydal.
In one of the more intriguing matches on the card, Tyler Black battled Drew McIntyre one on one. Black had apparently take exception to McIntyre offering to represent NEXT in the North American Title tournament, feeling he was also a worthy candidate. The two's clashing styles certainly made for a fun match, as while both were well versed on the mat, the power of McIntyre and the high flying skill of Black meshed well in this one. McIntyre ended up proving he was the better man on the night following the Future Shock.
A backstage promo with Richie Steamboat was next up. He said that next week he will be cashing in his World Junior Heavyweight Title shot against Johnny Gargano, and that he will prove that the Steamboat name is alive and well by taking home the belt!
Another major grudge match on this show saw Damien Sandow battle with Katsuhiko Nakajima. Nakajima came in aggressive, smashing Sandow with vicious kicks and strikes, and Sandow had to work hard to slow the match to his pace. When he did he did all he could to keep Nakajima on the mat, bending the rules which he knew inside and out perfectly, and frustrating his opponent time and time again. Nakajima finally fought back, and nailed the German Suplex, but Sandow got the ropes. Sandow raked the eyes and quickly nailed the Terminus after some knees to the head to secure the win.
Sandow post match declared himself "an American hero" who has vanquished America of a Japanese tourist who has no place in his ring. He vows to enlighten us all, and show why he is the best wrestler in NEXT and in the NWA. Your welcome!
The NWA World Tag Team Titles were on the line, as The Briscoes put their newly won titles on the line against one of NEXT's newest tag teams, Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi, Fusion. The Briscoes were unmatchable in terms of teamwork, as with so many years experience as a team despite both being under the age of 30 their skills were considerably more refined than a team with only a few matches under their belt. Omega and Ibushi however had their high risk high flying style that helped them to match their opponents, and their chemistry as partners is undeniable thanks to their similar styles. Indeed they came very close to victory when they hat their Golden Shower finisher on Jay, but he got his foot on the ropes. The Briscoes ended up retaining by hitting the Spike Jay Driller on Omega.
The main event was definitely a massive match, both in terms of the grudge that has been building and indeed the tournament. It saw The Revolution pairing of the NWA World Junior and NWA East Coast X Division Champion Johnny Gargano and Chuck Taylor take on a team calling themselves The Hybrid Athletes, Kyle Matthews and Jack Swagger. And what a match it was, with the big story running through it being Taylor's arm injury, which was worked on by Matthews and Swagger for most of the match. Gargano was stuck in his corner, watching his partner suffer as there was nothing he could really do. Finally Taylor managed to escape for the briefest of moments, and tagged in Gargano, who was a house on fire, taking on both Matthews and Swagger single handedly. Swagger and Gargano eventually started brawling on the outside, and as the ref watched Taylor and Matthews inside the ring Swagger smashed a chair over Gargano's back. Taylor somehow mustered enough energy to go for an Awful Waffle despite the agony he was in, only for Matthews to turn it into a Hidaka Lock. Taylor simply couldn't hold on, he tapped almost immediately.
Matthews refuses to let go of the hold, yet again he wants to snap that arm of Taylor right off! Swagger has Gargano, DOCTOR BOMB THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! Finally Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly run in to save Taylor and Gargano, but its too late as the damage has been done. They help their fallen team mates as Matthews and Swagger celebrate on the ramp to end the show.
