NWA Entertainment Smackdown 09/01/12[/u]
Welcome to this weeks episode of Smackdown. Before we even get to the show itself, some big news has gone on that we must run through.
• The NWA World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes have officially defected to NWA Entertainment from Impact. They will be wrestling on the Raw brand.
• Adam Cole has moved in the other direction, having quit The Revolution and NWA Entertainment to move to NWA Impact. The Revolution have replaced him with Richie Steamboat, who joined during NWA South Beach's Winter Wasteland event.
• Several other names have defected to NWA Entertainment, the biggest being Randy Orton who has signed for Smackdown, and will debut TONIGHT! Uhaa Nation has also signed for the blue brand, and is expected to resume his NEXT pairing with Harry Smith. The team will be known as Ground and Pound.
• Tyson Kidd has also signed for NWA Entertainment, and will be wrestling on Raw
• Cibernetico, who showed up and attacked Tommasso Ciampa and Richie Steamboat on Raw has not been signed. His actions were of his own accord, and security has been heightened to ensure he can't do the same next week.
• Leaving NWA Entertainment are Mike Bennett, Petey Williams, Tommaso Ciampa and Sonjay Dutt. We wish them well in their future endeavours.
Whew, what a busy news week! Now that thats out of the way, lets get to the action with our opening contest
Ground and Pound ("The Canadian Bulldog" Harry Smith and "One Man Nation" Uhaa Nation) vs "The Human Highlight Reel" Rey Mysterio and Trent Barreta
Smith had a little grudge to settle with Mysterio following the way he just walked off on his own after their tag match, and combined with the destructive force that is Uhaa Nation, Ground and Pound practically had their way with Mysterio and Barreta. To be fair on the smaller team, they did manage to nail some big moves on their larger opponents, taking them down by putting their own bodies on the line in the air, but it did only work for so long before size began to matter. Smith ended up pinning Mysterio after a Running Powerslam.
Winners- Ground and Pound
Post match, Mysterio got a microphone, looking very gloomy.
Mysterio: In recent times, I haven't been the Rey Mysterio I once was. In fact, I've been an utter failure. I can't win matches, I can't keep a job, and I'm struggling to support my family. I've disgraced the name Rey Mysterio with my failings, and I don't want to let anyone down anymore.
Mysterio puts down the microphone, AND TAKES OFF HIS MASK! What is he doing, why would he take off something so important to his culture and his wrestling career.
Mysterio: From now, I am no longer going to be known as Rey Mysterio, because I'm not good enough to hold that name now. Maybe when my legacy is settled, I can use it again, but not now. You will now know me for who I truly am, by my real name, Oscar Rubio!
He throws down his mask and leaves, the fans not knowing how to react, everyone is stunned. I guess we will continue on to the next match, and attempt to figure out why Rey Mysterio just voluntarily unmasked.
"The War Machine" Brock Lesnar vs "The Future of Fashion" Zema Ion
Another pretty one sided matchup for Lesnar here, Ion definitely gave more of a challenge than Mike Bennett did, but it was still a largely dominant display by "The War Machine". He finished off Ion with the F5, knocking him out.
Winner- Brock Lesnar
The same video from last week plays, talking about "the truth shall set you free", then a pyro goes off and the arena falls silent, as R-TRUTH makes his way out.
Truth: It seems like so many other promotions, NWA Entertainment has a conspiracy going on. For a start, R-Truth was not only not invited to compete in either the Raw or Smackdown Heavyweight Title Tournaments, he wasn't even offered a spot on the roster. Well I'm not sitting back and letting myself be told what to do by a bunch of little Jimmys, instead R-Truth is going to kick butt and take what is rightfully his. Maybe you don't agree, but its the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
R-Truth has certainly made an impact with this promo, and he is set to join Smackdown it seems.
Winners Gets a NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title Shot
"The Technical Messiah" Alex Shelley vs "The Master of the Dark Hadou" Kenny Omega vs Tyler Black
A fairly short matchup here, but still these 3 excellent athletes had more than enough time to showcase their skills, as they battled to see who would face Johnny Gargano for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title next week on Smackdown. This match was a lot more mat based than you might expect, with Shelley and Black putting on a clinic, while Omega was the more aerial of the three, taking some big risks to get ahead. It ended up being Black who got the win and the title shot, hitting Omega with God's Last Gift to pick up the victory.
Winner- Tyler Black
"The All American American" Jack Swagger vs Sean Waltman
This one came about following Swagger's attack on Waltman during his match with Kyle Matthews last week. Waltman wanted revenge in a big way, having come so close to reaching the final of the Heavyweight Title Tournament, and he really took the fight to Swagger here, both surviving the power of Swagger and hitting some big moves of his own. Indeed Waltman again came close to getting a clean pinfall victory over one of the Hybrid Athletes after the X-Factor, but before he could Kyle Matthews ran in and attacked Waltman, putting him in the Hidaka Lock for a DQ.
Winner- Sean Waltman by DQ
Matthews had the hold locked in deep, but before he could do any significant damage, Drew McIntyre ran in with a chair and chased off The Hybrid Athletes.
"The Viper" Randy Orton vs "The Party Starter" Curt Hawkins
You might not have expected it, but Hawkins did a lot better here than many might have expected, he held his own with one of wrestling's most recognised stars in "The Viper", a man who challenges for belts anywhere he goes. Hawkins looked to keep Orton grounded, wearing him down with holds and looking to exhaust him. This only worked for so long though, as Orton got his second wind and fought back, hitting all of his big moves. One RKO later and Hawkins was done.
Winner- Randy Orton
Orton celebrated afterwards, however out ran "The War Machine" Brock Lesnar. He attacked Orton from behind, dropping him with the F5, laughing at his handiwork. What was Lesnar's reason for attacking Orton unprovoked?
Smackdown Heavyweight Title Tournament Final
"The Chosen One" Drew McIntyre vs "The Most Hybrid Athlete in the NWA" Kyle Matthews
A month or two ago and Matthews would have been a strong favourite to win this, having arguably been one of the biggest, if not the biggest breakout singles competitor of 2012 despite his awful attitude. McIntyre's stock has risen considerably in the past 2 months however, to the extent that many were backing him to go all the way here. And you really couldn't split these two, they were even in just about every department, with McIntyre managing to keep up with Matthews on the mat, and Matthews being able to match McIntyre in the fighting department. Unfortunately, with this one needing a decisive winner, it effectively meant anything goes, and Jack Swagger took full advantage to run down and help out Matthews. However, Sean Waltman ran in and made the save, delivering a big spin kick to Matthews' head and the X-Factor to Swagger, which was followed by a Future Shock by McIntyre. As Waltman played to the fans, Matthews recovered and smacked McIntyre in the back of the head with the Slurpee Kick, quickly covering McIntyre to steal the 3 count and the title before Waltman knew what happened!
Winner- Kyle Matthews
Kyle Matthews celebrates with the Smackdown Heavyweight Title, as McIntyre lies knocked out on the canvas. Matthews then gets the mic.
Matthews: Once again, the most hybrid athelete in the NWA proves that he is the best wrestler on the planet by taking another belt,. Nobody's beaten me yet on Smackdown, and nobody will. Now that I hold one Heavyweight belt, I'm brought to another belt that I crave, the World Heavyweight Title. Alberto Del Rio, you still haven't answered my challenge, you've well and truly shown that your a coward, and not worthy of calling yourself a champion. But I'm a fair man Alberto, maybe your just stupid and need things to be explained to you a few times before you get it. Consider this the final call Alberto, accept my challenge now, or else I'm heading to California to take what is rightfully mine!
The show ends with Matthews holding up the belt, and Swagger raising his hand in victory. Join us next week as Drew McIntyre and Sean Waltman team up to face The Hybrid Athletes, Kyle Matthews and Jack Swagger!
