So this show was almost painful to write, I've been pretty much crippled by writers block so a show that would usually take me 1-2 days to write has taken me over a week. I'm setting a date of next week for the rest of the 1st round of the tournament, but it could be longer than that depending obviously on how quickly I can get through this block. I do have some ideas flowing now though so when the tournament is complete I will be better set to write to my usual standard again.
NWA Hybrid Pro TV 08/11/2013 : The Hybrid Tournament Night 1
NWA Hybrid Pro owner Magnus D comes out to start the show.
Magnus: Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to night 1 of the Hybrid Tournament! This tournament is one like no other in that I will announce the stipulations before each and every matchup, there's no telling what sort of match you will see. Our first match sees former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Kyle Matthews take on rookie sensation Drew Gulak. Now both of these men are mat specialists with a submission finisher, so what better way to see who the best is than in a submission match! First to make their opponent tap out wins.
All 32 wrestlers in this tournament are going to get a chance to say some words before their opening round match.
Gulak: "Kyle Matthews, maybe you are one of the best NWA Champions we've had, but to me your nothing more than a stepping stone on my path to greatness. When I make you tap here tonight, everybody will step up and take notice of "The University City Stretcher"
Matthews: "Now I know what your thinking: Kyle, you said you didn't want a rematch with Christopher Daniels for the title. Well I'm in this tournament for a different reason, to prove I'm still the best the NWA has to offer. When I win this tournament, I'm not going to challenge the NWA World Champion, but I'm sure winning this tournament will get me and Jack Swagger a shot at the Rockstars of Wrestling. I'm going to dominate this tournament because I am the most hybrid athlete in NWA history!
Oh, and Alberto Del Rio, don't think I didn't hear what you've been saying about me. As far as I'm concerned I beat you fair and square for your belt and you don't have any reason to face me again. Unless you want your arm breaking again I suggest you stay in CPW where you belong"
Submission Match
Drew Gulak vs Kyle Matthews
An awesome match to start things off here. You got the impression that Matthews was taking Gulak very lightly, and he almost paid for it in a big way when the ref took a bump. As he recovered, Vordell Walker ran down and punched Matthews' lights out, allowing Gulak to lock the Gu-Lock,, with Matthews coming so close to tapping out. Matthews made the ropes as Gulak called for the Spine Splitter. Matthews reversed to the Hidaka Lock, and Gulak had no choice but to tap. He may have lost but Gulak's stock continues to rise with a strong showing against the former World champ.
Winner- Kyle Matthews
Magnus: Wasn't that a great match to start things off. Well now its time to hide behind your sofas and put your earplugs in, because Bo Dallas is here, and he is taking on Sami Zayn. I've found this one tricky to come up with a stipulation for if I'm honest.
A fan who looks very like IRS in disguise shouts "singing contest"
Magnus: Dear god no, no way will this be a singing contest. OK, Bo Dallas if you win you can sing to the fans after the match, and Sami if you win I'll give you 5 bucks. Lets get this over with.
Zayn: This tournament is my chance to break out from the pack and become a main event player. Everybody knows that I have talent, just ask Adam Pearce, and now its time to take that talent and rise to the next level. Sami Zayn's time is here!
Bo Dallas decides to cut his pre-match promo in the ring, maybe this wasn't such a good ideas.
Dallas: First of all, I just want to say thank yo so much fans of South Beach, you truly moved me with your reactions in the Elimination Chamber. Not only did you chant my name for the entire match, you even took time to wish me a heart felt goodbye as I left. I love each and every one of you, and I'm going to win the entire tournament just for you fans.
If Bo Dallas Wins He Can Sing, If Sami Zayn Wins He Gets $5
Bo Dallas vs Sami Zayn
Largely a one sided affair, Dallas has improved as an in-ring competitor, but he's not on the same level as Zayn who is one of the best cruiserweight wrestlers on the planet right now. Zayn would finish this one with the Springboard Tornado DDT to advance.
Winner- Sami Zayn
Dallas takes the mic post match.
Dallas: So maybe I didn't win, but that doesn't mean I can't serenade you fans anyway. I know you'll enjoy it, so "DON'T STOP BOLEVING...."
Before Dallas can sing any more of that awful song, Magnus' two security guards (who I might add are wearing masks to hide their identity) grab Dallas and escort him from the premises. Problem is nobody took the mic from him and he's still singing all the way up the ramp. Dear god make it stop! Magnus pays Sami his $5 before taking the mic.
Magnus: I'm sorry you had to sit through that fans, I'd say it won't happen again but no matter how many times I change the locks Bo Dallas keeps finding a way in. Lets just get to the next match between Karl Anderson and Mike Bennett. These two strike me as old school performers, who can not only beat the hell out of you but can entertain while they do it. So I'm going to let these two battle it out in a traditional wrestling match.
Anderson: Everybody knows what I can do, I'm a former 2 time Hybrid Pro Heavyweight Champion. Thats all you need to know, my fists will do the talking.
Bennett: Yes ladies, "The Prodigy" is here, ready to take on all comers and win the Hybrid Tournament. I'm already part of the NWA North American Tag Team Title holding group known as The Pistols, and our starts will only be enhanced when I win this tournament. Your looking at your future NWA World Heavyweight Champion!
Traditional Wrestling Match
Karl Anderson vs Mike Bennett
This one was never going to be that flashy, it was a solid matchup no doubt, but it perhaps lacked a bit of excitement compared to the opener. Interestingly though the fans were behind Anderson and booing Bennett, something you wouldn't expect considering Bennett is part of the popular Pistols. Anderson advanced following a Gun Stun to give the fans what they wanted.
Winner- Karl Anderson
Magnus: Alright match number 4 is the first ever clash of The Pistols as Samuray Del Sol and Tommaso Ciampa do battle. You know, this matchup reminds me a little of Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon in that you have a talented high flying wrestler doing battle with a bigger yet agile opponent. So what better way to decide who is best than in a ladder match!
Samuray chooses not to cut a promo, but to instead simply pose for the camera, throwing a few fists and kicks before heading for the ring.
Ciampa: Samuray, I just want to say that tonight won't be anything personal, I'm not going to hold back because I want to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. I will win tonight and prove that the NWA will be dominated by a new project soon: Project Ciampa!
Ladder Match
Samuray Del Sol vs Tommaso Ciampa
This could be the showstealing match of the night, as these two laid it all on the line and delivered a matchup worthy of the legacy of the ladder match. Del Sol stepped up big time here and showcased some fantastic high flying moves, while Ciampa chose to use the ladder as a weapon, smashing Del Sol with it on quite a few occasions and throwing him into it. Ciampa looked to have this wrapped up, climbing the ladder, but Del Sol kicked up and went under Ciampa, dropping him off the ladder with a Del Sol Driver. Samuray then climbed the ladder, but not to grab the prize. 450 SPLASH FROM THE TOP OF THE LADDER! Ciampa is out, and when Del Sol recovers he climbs the ladder and gets the win before Ciampa can make it to his feet.
Winner- Samuray Del Sol
Magnus: What a matchup we had there, give these men the ovation they deserve!
The fans give both men a standing ovation for their efforts as the two shake hands before leaving together.
Magnus: Now onto our next match between two of the bigger men in this tournament: Samoa Joe and Jack Swagger. These are two men who just like to hurt people, so I'm going to give them the platform to do just that to each other: a no holds barred match!
Swagger: Tonight may be one of my toughest ever tests, that being to try and defeat you Samoa Joe. Your a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion and your quite possibly back to your very best. But unlike you Joe I'm a real American, and this All American American must win tonight to stand up for the United States.
Joe: Jack Swagger. What sort of a name is that anyway? Compared to me you know jack about wrestling and you don't even have half the swagger than Samoa Joe has. Tonight Jack I'm not just going to defeat you, I'm going to hurt you. This tournament is my redemption as a singles competitor, and when I win, Christopher Daniels your belt will belong to me. Because I am Samoa Joe, I am pro wrestling, and I WILL be your next NWA World Heavyweight Champion!
No Holds Barred
Jack Swagger vs Samoa Joe
As expected, these two just beat the living hell out of each other for the entire matchup, and it was pretty much a dead heat, with Swagger's superior mat wrestling ability cancelled out by Joe's brute force and vicious strikes. Joe locked in the Choke, grasping it as tight as possible and strangling the life out of Swagger, forcing him to tap out in a hurry to save his own life.
Winner- Samoa Joe
Magnus: Another awesome match there and Samoa Joe advances. Now we move on to Homicide and Vordell Walker, two men from very contrasting backgrounds, but with a similar knowledge of professional wrestling styles. Both these men have finishers that you know will end a match, whether its the Cop Killer or the Juji-Gatame. So lets make this a finishers match, first to hit their finishing move wins.
Homicide: A lot of people forget how good Homicide is. But here in New Jersey, everybody knows how good i am. I started out here, this state is my blood. Some might think I'm done at 36, but I'm in my prime, and the Notoorious 187 is going to be the NWA World champ. Chris Daniels, I'm coming for you n***a!
Walker: Maybe you all think that I'm in this tournament because I want to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Well, I'm not, I'm in this tournament for one thing: to fight you Kyle Matthews. People have wondered why I attacked you at the last Hybrid Pro. Well, this shoulder is the rason, you snapped it, costing me 2 months of my career and costing me my spot in The Group. I could have had a place in history, being there when The Prophecy were destroyed forever, but through some petty act you injured me and I will get my revenge.
Finishers Match
Homicide vs Vordell Walker
These two meshed well as was expected, both are great technical wrestlers in addition to being brawlers, with Walker perhaps having an edge on the mat and Homicide having the edge in a fight. Walker had a lot to think about, as while he only really had the Juji-Gatame to finish off Homicide, Homicide has multiple finishing moves, so could end the match anytime in any manner of ways. Yet in an upset, it was Walker who advanced, escaping a Cop Killa and locking in the Juji-Gatame. While Homicide didn't tap to the hold, the only requirement was for the move to be hit, so therefore Walker advances.
Winner- Vordell Walker
Magnus: Two top young athletes are taking part in our next match as Kenny Omega and Tony Nese do battle. These two are both exciting X style competitors, so I'm going to have these two compete how they so fit in a No Limits match.
Omega chooses not to cut a pre-match promo, as he's too busy perfcting his EX Hadouken. He turns and delivrs the move to our cameraman, knocking him off his feet, before letting out a yell and charging to the ring!
Nese: Tonight its time for The Premier Athlete to make his breakthrough. Your the first step Kenny Omega, when I beat you people will step up and notice me, and then the sky is the limit. I will be the next breakout star in Hybrid Pro and I will win this tournament!
No Limits Match
Kenny Omega vs Tony Nese
What exactly a No Limits match is was never explained, but from what I can see it meant no count outs on the top rope or outside the ring, meaning there were dives aplenty from these two. But we got some solid pure wrestling here to, especially from Nese who is such an underrated prospect in Hybrid Pro. Omega had this sewn up when he went for the Croyt's Wrath, but Nese turned it into a Victory Roll and got the shocking 3 count, a massive win for Nese to take him to the next round.
Winner- Tony Nese
Magnus: Excellent matchup there and congrats to Tony Nese for making the next round. Now to our main event of the evening. On one side of the ring we have Sami Callihan, a vicious, destructive maniac who will tear down anyone in his path, as he did when he won the Hybrid Pro Heavyweight Title. And on the other side we have Antonio Cesaro, a Swiss wrestler with a love of uppercuts and giant swings. I want to incorporate from both of your styles of wrestling and make something unique, so I'm going to go with a European rounds system and no disqualifications. First wrestler to two pins, submission or a knockout in the 10 rounds wins.
Cesaro: I don't have a lot to say, other than when I deliver my Very European Uppercut and neutralize you, all my opponents will step aside and let me face the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. I will be the most European NWA World Champion of all time!
Callihan is another who chooses not to cut a pre-match promo, instead he just stares psychotically into the camera, a smirk slowly appearing on his face, before leaving the room.
No Disqualification European Rules Match
Antonio Cesaro vs Sami Callihan
Possibly the only time you will ever see a European Rules match fought under no disqualifications, this was very unique and somehow combined both wrestlers strengths into one whole.
The first two round passed quickly and were filled with brutality and excellent mat work, I never thought we'd say that in the same sentence. Then in the 3rd round, Callihan decided it was a good time to grab the ring bell and cave in Cesaro's skull, which he did. One Stretch Muffler to the busted open Cesaro later and Callihan had the first fall.
And yet with Callihan winning the match match took a dramatic turn in the fifth round. Callihan had a table setup, and was looking to drop Cesaro from the top. That was until Cesaro poked Callihan in the eyes, got him into position and nailed a TOP ROPE RICOLA BOMB THROUGH THE TABLE! And rather than go for the pinfall, Cesaro instead invited the referee to count. Callihan couldn't get up in time and Cesaro was declared the winner of the match via knockout, not even needing to win another fall.
Winner- Antonio Cesaro
So this means we have our first set of second round match for the tournaments conclusion 2 shows from now. Here is what we will see-
