So this isn't my best show by a long shot, I'm a tad burnt out after Summerslam so it may take me a few weeks to get back into the swing of things properly again. So yeah, this is a basic show and nothing more, so apologies if its lacking in places.
NWA Maximum: Maximum Impact 07/08/2015
We open the show with "Commissioner of Asskicking" Steve Blackman in his office.
Blackman: "Hello wrestling fans and welcome to Maximum Impact. Tonight you will see the long awaited first round of our NWA Maximum Tag Team Title Tournament, to crown the new Tag Team Champions. The semi finals will happen next week with the final taking place on a special iPPV event on the 28th August. This will be an important show for many reasons: rivalries will be settled, titles will be defended and every fan in attendance will get a show they will never forget. Thanks for listening and let the asskicking commence!"
Drew Galloway vs Arcadia
Galloway got a standing ovation from the fans in attendance, with everyone pleased to see him back in New Jersey after a long spell away. Galloway looked sharp, and while Arcadia had an opportunity or two to demonstrate his high flying moves, this was a basic showcase of the talents of Galloway and what he brings to NWA Maximum. He would hit the Future Shock DDT and that would be enough to put away Arcadia.
Winner- Drew Galloway
We go backstage to the cellars of the NWA Maximum arena, where Personal Demons is sitting alongside The Reject.
Demons: "Shane, Shane, Shane. You just had to stick your nose in didn't you. You just had to get involved when I was on the cusp of greatness, when I had the NWA World Title within my reaches. Well you got my attention Shane, and you couldn't be any worse off for that. You cost me the one thing I've been fighting my entire career for, the NWA World Heavyweight Title, and now Shane you are going to pay. Because if you thought what I did to my brother was bad, then its nothing compared to what I'm going to do to you. You and me Shane are going to fight one on one, in the middle of the ring, and when we do, I'm going to end your pathetic excuse for a career. Then nothing and I mean nothing will stand in the way of me getting the title shot that I deserve, I was robbed so AJ, I hope you are ready for round two!"
NWA Maximum Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1
The New York Connection (Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder) vs The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin)
Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder have reformed their tag team, and now have their sights set on gold in NWA Maximum. However, The Motor City Machine Guns have also recently reformed and are as sharp a team as any in the NWA, as they showed here by running through their massive repertoire of double team moves as they picked apart The NYC. That's not to say Hawkins and Ryder didn't get some near falls, they came close on a couple of occasions to getting the win, hitting a Double DDT on Sabin or a near fall that was broken up by Shelley. Sabin recovered and the two got Ryder alone, nailing the ASCS Rush which was enough to keep him down for 3.
Winners- The Motor City Machine Guns
Karl Anderson vs Cesaro
Anderson has two of the 5 wins he needs in order to force Randy Orton to grant him his long awaited TV Title match. However this was a whole new kind of challenge for Anderson as he faced the returning Cesaro, a man who has largely failed to make a regular impact in the NWA in recent times. While both of these men are very competent mat wrestlers, this one was more of a wild brawl, as it would be an exchange of forearms and punches from Anderson versus the brutal uppercuts of Cesaro, in addition to some weapons being used. At one point Cesaro hat the Giant Swing to daze Anderson, then followed it up with a Very European Uppercut, getting a 2.999 and coming so close to dashing Anderson's hopes. Cesaro tried for a Neutralizer, but Anderson escaped and hat a Neckbreaker for a near fall. Another back and forth exchange of strikes resulted in Cesaro coming out on top, he then threw Anderson to the ropes and tried another Very European Uppercut, BUT ANDERSON REVERSES TO THE GUN STUN IN MID AIR! 1-2-3, Anderson wins it and that's win number three.
Winner- Karl Anderson
Anderson celebrates and makes belt motions around his waist, signifying he will soon be wearing the TV Title of Randy Orton. Meanwhile Randy Orton watches on from the back, knowing that soon he may very well have to fight the man who has been pursuing him relentlessly for months. Orton will be in action later on tonight in a TV Title defence.
NWA Maximum Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1
The Rhodes Scholars (Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow) vs BEYOND (Biff Busick and Drew Gulak) w/Chris Dickinson
These two teams went back and forth a number of months ago in NWA Maximum in a rivalry that was almost entirely dominated by BEYOND, yet saw The Rhodes Scholars come out on top to retain the NWA Maximum Tag Team Titles at that time. This time around The Rhodes Scholars showed a lot more confidence and kept up well with their violent opponents, using their ring smarts and technical skill to control this match at times. However BEYOND are as violent a team as you will find here in the NWA, they have reformed after a few months apart and they look more focused on their mission than ever before. Near the end, Dickinson would drag Rhodes to the outside and nail him with a Brain Drill ON THE FLOOR! Busick and Gulak then grabbed their baseball bats, DOUBLE BASEBALL BAT SHOT TO SANDOW'S HEAD! A KO victory for BEYOND who advance to the semi finals.
Winners- BEYOND
Post match Rhodes chose to leave on his own, as Sandow is attended to by medical staff and may have a concussion. This could be the end of this team, a rather premature revival of the former NWA Maximum Tag Team Champions it seems.
NWA Maximum TV Title Match
Randy Orton w/David Otunga "Attorney At Law" vs Bandido Jr
Just a basic showcase match for Orton here, Bandido Jr showed a few flashy moves, but for the most part he was cannon fodder for Orton's signature moves as David Otunga looked on from ringside. Orton would hit the RKO and pin Bandido Jr for the 3 count.
Winner- Randy Orton
Post match before Orton can even celebrate, Karl Anderson charges for the ring, but Orton rushes out of the ring and into the crowd, escaping to the parking lot and into his car before Anderson can get his hands on him.
NWA Maximum Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1
The Unholy Alliance (Johnny Gargano and Kyle Matthews) vs SST (Homicide and Low-Ki)
After some time apart as a team, The Unholy Alliance has once again reformed for the purpose of getting hold of some NWA Maximum gold, taking on SST who have lost some momentum following a largely conclusive loss to Samoa Joe and Jay Lethal in the matches they battled in. This was a very competitive match, initially The Unholy Alliance showed the quality teamwork that brought them temporary success as a team in the past, hitting Low-Ki with a series of double team moves. But some miscommunication saw Gargano accidentally smack Matthews with a running kick and that allowed SST to take control, isolating the former NWA World Champion from his partner. Low-Ki used his wide range of strikes to lay a beating on Matthews, while Homicide brought weapons into play and smacked Matthews with everything he could find. This backfired later on as when Homicide charged at Matthews with a steel chair, he would get it kicked back in his face! Matthews then rolled over and made the hot tag to Gargano who cleaned house on both SST members, making up for his earlier mistake the only way he could. Homicide got taken out of the match after a Spear, then Matthews and Gargano prepared to wrap this up. They grab Low-Ki and Gargano holds him in position for the Hurts Donut, as Matthews hit a Slurpee Kick to Low-Ki! That provides the momentum for Gargano to hit the Hurts Donut and get the 3 count to win the match and advance!
Winners- The Unholy Alliance
NWA Maximum Heavyweight Title Match
Dan Maff vs Matt Tremont
Tremont was an interesting challenger for Maff, with his violent, hardcore style giving Maff a lot to think about. He threw every weapon he could at Maff and took a lot out of the champion, but Maff was able to take most of what Tremont dished out and could fire back on his own. Maff would grab Tremont for the Half Nelson Suplex, HALF NELSON SUPLEX ON A CHAIR! That would put Tremont down for a 3 count and help Maff retain his title.
Winner- Dan Maff
The first win of the 5 needed by Maff to get him a shot at the title of his choice. Before Maff can leave, Samoa Joe comes down to the ring, and the two have an intense staredown as the fans chant Joe's name. The two both leave without coming to blows, but I would love to see a match between Maff, a former Prophecy member and Joe, a former Group member!
NWA Maximum Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1
The Premier Athlete Brand (Caleb Konley and Trent Barreta) w/Tony Nese vs The Pistols (Mike Bennett and Tommaso Ciampa) w/Matt Taven
Interesting match here as former Pistols member Tony Nese has chosen to form a new team, The Premier Athlete Brand, rather than join up with his former Pistols team mates. Nese was at ringside to manage his new team mates against his former partners, with Matt Taven at ringside for The Pistols to ensure no cheap tactics were played here. The match was very entertaining, it was mainly a mat based matchup with Ciampa also using a bit of his power advantage on Konley and Barreta. Late on in the match Nese tried to get involved, leaping up on the apron and trying to distract Bennett. However Taven would pull him down off the apron and the two started fighting back and forth with punches on the outside. As Ciampa pummelled away on Konley in the corner with punches, Bennett nailed Barreta with the Box Office Smash and that got 3 to ensure The Pistols advance to the next round.
Winners- The Pistols
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles makes his way to the ring, dressed for action with his NWA World Heavyweight Title in tow. He gets in the ring and grabs the mic.
Styles: "A lot of people might think that now I've defeated Personal Demons and proven myself to be the most phenomenal World Heavyweight Champion of all time that I'll just sit on the sidelines, waiting for challengers to come along. Well I know that's not why Steve Blackman brought me here and I know that's not how this belt gains prestige. So here's the deal, if anyone in the back wants a piece of "The Phenomenal One" and his NWA World Heavyweight Title belt, I'm standing right here, so come and get me!"
Styles passes his title to the ring announcer and awaits a challenger. And he doesn't have to wait long as his challenge is answered by none other than Roderick Strong!
NWA World Heavyweight Title Match
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs Roderick Strong
Great main event here, with Roderick Strong providing a great challenge for AJ Styles and pushing him to his very limits. Strong used his wide range of backbreakers to ground the champ, working on his back and locking a few submissions on that area to try and wear him down. Styles on the other hand used more of a high flying approach in this one, trying to avoid getting into a mat based contest which would play to Strong's strengths and thus potentially lose him the title. Strong managed to hit the Gibson Driver, which got him a very close 2 count, then locked in the Strong Hold on the already weakened back of Styles, which had the champ screaming in pain. Styles was locked in the whole for a good half minute, then finally made it over to the ropes to break the hold. Strong tried to finish off Styles with the Death by Roderick, but Styles escaped and out of nowhere hit the Pele! Both men were down for a standing 10 count before they made it to their feet, with Strong missing a Sick Kick attempt. Styles then grabbed Strong, STYLES CLASH! 1-2-3, Styles retains!
Winner- AJ Styles
After the match the two shake hands and Strong raises Styles' hand in victory, before Styles does the same for Strong, who came close to a big upset victory and an NWA World Title run. Styles looks good and again you have to wonder who is capable of dethroning him. Thanks for tuning in and see you next week for the semi-finals of the NWA Maximum Tag Team Title tournament!
