NWA Maximum: Maximum Impact 21/08/2015
Kyle Matthews vs Chris Sabin
Great, fast paced opener here, serving as the first of two previews to what we will see in the Tag Team Title Tournament final next week at Maximum Carnage. It was a bit of an odd match as while Matthews was the smaller of the two, he was the more grounded wrestler of the two and tried to keep this on the mat, while Sabin was the one trying to speed the match up and take to the air. After a back and forth contest, with Sabin getting near falls off a Running Powerbomb and a Tiger Suplex, Matthews ended up getting the win by making Sabin tap to the Hidaka Lock.
Winner- Kyle Matthews
Daniel Bryan vs Azrieal
A basic showcase match here for Daniel Bryan, as while Azrieal is a competent wrestler and talented high flyer he is not the mat wrestler that Bryan is. Bryan ran through his repertoire of moves and while Azrieal got a few moves in himself, you got the impression Bryan was almost toying with Azrieal at times and could have finished the match anytime he wanted. Bryan would make Azrieal tap out to the Yes Lock a little over 5 minutes into the contest.
Winner- Azrieal
Bryan celebrates and fires up the fans with "YES! chants all around, as AJ Styles is shown in the back watching on, knowing he has a big challenge coming up next week and a serious threat to his World Heavyweight Title. Will Styles retain or will Daniel Bryan finally win the big one?
Johnny Gargano vs Alex Shelley
Not only is this a 2nd preview of what to expect in the Tag Team Title Tournament final, but it is also a battle of two former World Junior Heavyweight Champions. In fact it was Alex Shelley who defeated Johnny Gargano for that very title, so this match had a certain grudge to it with Gargano looking to get his win back 2 years later. It was another very good match, as Gargano and Shelley exchanged holds and counter holds in what was almost like a chess match, neither man gaining an advantage. Eventually Gargano tried to up the pace of the match as Shelley began to control the mat exchanges, hitting some of his big moves including a Super Kick and a Baby Ace Crusher, both getting near falls. Gargano ended up locking the Crosston Crab, but Shelley managed to escape the hold, locking the Border City Stretch. Gargano reversed that into the Gargano Escape, but then Shelley again reversed into the Border City Stretch. Gargano made the ropes and Shelley then looked for the Sliced Bread, only for Gargano to reverse and go for the Hurts Donut, but Shelley reversed, SLICED BREAD #2! 1-2-2.999! Shelley cannot believe that! Shelley goes for the Automatic Midnight, but Gargano reverses, HURTS DONUT! 1-2-SHELLEY GETS HIS FOOT ON THE ROPES! Gargano's frustration shows as he drags Shelley back into the middle of the ring, LOCKING THE CROSSTON CRAB! Shelley holds on and manages to reverse his way out of the hold, and slips around the back of Gargano, SHELLEY CLUTCH! 1-2-3, Shelley wins, what a great match!
Winner- Alex Shelley
Post match the two shake hands, but which team will win at Maximum Carnage? Based on the two matches tonight it could go either way, but based on this match does Alex Shelley have Johnny Gargano's number? Or will the Matthews vs Sabin match be a more accurate reflection of what we will see?
NWA Maximum Heavyweight Title Match
Dan Maff vs Tony Nese w/Caleb Konley and Trent Barreta
Interesting contest here, as while Maff had a definite weight and power advantage, Nese had the advantage of The Premier Athlete Brand being at ringside plus could probably be called the superior mat wrestler. So the match we got saw Maff using that size advantage to toss Nese around, The premier Athlete Brand interfering whenever Nese looked like he was in danger of losing the match, and Nese mixing submissions with some high flying to combat Maff's power and stiff strikes. Maff setup to hit the Burning Hammer, but The Premier Athlete Brand once again got involved, smacking Maff in the back with steel chairs to make him drop Nese and beating him down 2 on 1. That was until SAMOA JOE ran in to make the save, running out and attacking Nese's partners, knocking them down with a Double Clothesline, following that with an STJoe on Barreta and a Muscle Buster on Konley. Joe exits the ring as Nese gets to his feet and goes for a 450 Splash on Maff. He goes for it but Maff moves and Nese crashes onto the canvas! Maff lifts Nese up, BURNING HAMMER! 1-2-3, Maff wins, but had it not been for the intervention of his opponent next week Samoa Joe then Tony Nese may have been holding the belt right now.
Winner- Dan Maff
Post match Joe grabs the NWA Maximum Heavyweight Title before the ref can give it to Maff, looking at the belt lovingly before giving it to Maff, promising him he will be in for a fight next week before leaving. Maff celebrates with the title, and I can't wait to see what these two do in the ring next week.
Karl Anderson vs Cody Rhodes
A bit of an ace in the hole pick from Randy Orton as a final roadblock for Karl Anderson, as Randy Orton's former Legacy team mate Cody Rhodes is the person chosen to face Anderson. Rhodes has embarked once again a singles career and is more focused than ever on success, so is a tough opponent for sure. Anderson on the other hand has a match he has been clamouring for within his grasp, if he can win here he gets Randy Orton one on one next week on iPPV. Anderson was fired up early on, taking the fight to Rhodes with everything he had in his arsenal, including some stiff punches and a few shots from a steel chair. Rhodes got back into the match with a well timed chair shot of his own, then kept Anderson on the mat with some submissions targeting the neck to wear him down for the Cross Rhodes. He would lock in a Sleeper Hold after Anderson attempted to mount a fightback, as the crowd hot behind Anderson as much as they could for him to get out of the hold. Anderson got to his feet and escaped with a Jawbreaker, leading to a standing 10 count.
Anderson then began a fightback, hitting a few Clotheslines followed by a Spinebuster for a near fall. He followed this with another nasty chairshot, then a Brainbuster that got a 2 count. He then called for the Gun Stun, BUT DAVID OTUNGA HEADS FOR THE RING! He smacks Anderson in the back with his briefcase! Otunga rolls out of the ring and he may have cost Anderson the match, all part of Randy Orton's plan I expect. Rhodes picks up Anderson. CROSS RHODES! 1-2-2.999, ANDERSON KICKS OUT! The fans explode and Otunga cannot believe it! Rhodes drags Anderson up and looks for one more. BUT ANDERSON HITS THE GUN STUN OUT OF NOWHERE! 1-2-3, ANDERSON WINS!
Winner- Karl Anderson
Karl Anderson against the odds has defeated Cody Rhodes, and Randy Orton is now finally going to have to put his belt on the line against Anderson. But that isn't all, as "Commissioner of Asskicking" Steve Blackman appears on the titantron.
Blackman: "Good job Karl, there's a reason I marked you for success from the minute you stepped into NWA Maximum, because you are one of the toughest wrestlers on this planet. Anyone else and I'd not have agreed to Randy Orton putting 5 guys in your way, but I knew you'd beat them all and you proved me right. And now I'm going to reward you and make sure this ends once and for all. Next week on iPPV, you won't just be facing Randy Orton in any old singles match, you will be facing him inside A STEEL CAGE!"
Big announcement here, and while Anderson doesn't show any emotion, inside he has to be pleased about this decision. Orton will have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, next week this long rivalry will be settled!
Main Event, Grudge Match
"Kryptonite" Shane Helms vs The Reject
Helms is one week away from what could be his final ever match, as he takes on the right hand man of Personal Demons as well as his former best friend in The Reject. In the two previous encounters between Helms and The Reject in NWA Maximum, these two are at one win each, with The Reject winning their first encounter before Helms won the rematch with a ladder stipulation added, so this was also the rubber match. It was a great match as Helms stepped up his aggression levels and took out a lot of his frustrations on The Reject, who's only means of keeping up with Helms and his high impact approach was to take to the air with as many high risks as he could. Helms would end up hitting The Reject with a brutal Vertabreaker which was enough to put him down for the 3 count.
Winner- Shane Helms
Post match before Shane Helms can celebrate, PERSONAL DEMONS ATTACKS HIM FROM BEHIND! Demons smacks Helms in the back multiple times with a steel chair, then follows it with a shot to the head! He picks up Helms, TWIST OF FATE! Demons stands over Helms and shouts at him that "his career is finished", and next week live on iPPV it may very well happen.
Kyle Matthews vs Chris Sabin
