“CALM LIKE A BOMB”
12/19/2015
RESEDA, CALIFORNIA
The show starts off with Samoa Joe making his way ring to mostly boos from the crowd. Joe says tonight he came to send a message. He says Christopher Daniels attacked him two weeks ago, but now he's too scared to fight him like a man. He says tonight, because he won't fight Joe, Joe will have to destroy someone else in his place. This leads to Kevin Steen making his way out to a great reaction. Steen says he doesn't give a damn about Joe's motives or vendettas. He says Joe went looking for a fight, and he found one. Steen says Joe has a pretty big reputation as a tough guy, and he's been at the top of the game for a lot of years now, but tonight, it's Kevin Steen's time to show that HE is the new face of professional wrestling! Both men have a brief stare down from across the aisle before breaking off, and we get this show underway!
Cedric Alexander vs. Ricochet
Ricochet is a former World Junior Heavyweight champion, and for a man with his skills and experience, it's easy to see why he thinks pretty highly of himself. Ricochet wasn't giving Alexander much respect tonight, and while he put on a solid display for the time this match went on, Alexander just went a bit harder and at one point looked like he had the match in the bag after hitting the Lumbar Check. Ricochet would wisely (read: cowardly) roll out of the ring, however, after taking the move, and then would ascend the ramp, claiming he'd had enough and Alexander "wasn't worth his time." Alexander may not have been pleased with getting the win by count out, but he'll just have to accept it until he gets another crack at him.
Before the next match, Jay Lethal would make his way out to the ring looking pretty confident. Jay would grab the mic and state that while tonight his opponent may be a nobody, a loser, and a curtain jerker, the fans will still get the pleasure of seeing the best in the business do what he does best, and that's put on a wrestling clinic! He yells for the "pencil neck geek" to get down to the ring and do his job already! The man who comes out from the back is none other than Matt Sydal, though, which gets a huge ovation and makes Jay Lethal look like Jay Delusional.
Matt Sydal vs. Jay Lethal
Lethal would try to play mind games early, not wanting to tangle with the fast paced and exuberant Sydal. Lethal would try to slow the pace early and get Sydal off his groove, but Sydal proved to be more of a handful than Lethal tried to lead on early and ended up sending the pace into a frenzy. Sydal would have Lethal on the run near end, but Lethal proved why he is really one of the best, picking up his game near the end as well and nearly connecting with the Lethal Injection, but Sydal managed to reverse that with a big Spinning Wheel Kick to knock Lethal for a loop. Sydal would come off the top and try to hit a Huracanrana into a roll-up, but Lethal would manage to reverse the pin attempt into a pin attempt of his own, holding the tights as he did without the ref seeing it and getting the three! Lethal steals one here and looks very pleased with himself, pointing to his temple and smiling as he looked on at a frustrated Sydal, and nobody can doubt Lethal's smarts in the ring, whether we like it or not.
Next out we have Claudio Castagnoli, wearing a flat cap and a nice jacket, looking to be in good spirits tonight as the fans cheered him on. Claudio would begin to speak, going into how he feels he is the greatest international talent in the world and shouldn't be subjected to having to face the man he must face tonight. He feels he has beaten this man enough times, but for some reason, the prospect of seeing a man as great as he is, of superior lineage, genetics, and skills, taking on a man of low birth, bad hygiene, and with very little actual skill to speak of, is the kind of carnival acts these promoters like to pass as entertainment to the fans. He says tonight, he will destroy this man and show everyone what true superiority looks like over low class scum! With that, a familiar theme hits and the fans erupt into chants of "OLE!" as out to the ring comes a very excited El Generico, who probably didn't understand a word of what Claudio had to say for he is only fluent in Spanish, from what I understand.
Claudio Castagnoli vs. El Generico
Of course these two have a great back and forth encounter, because when do they not? Really lazy booking by whoever put this show together, which is going to be a theme. Claudio tries to break the will of Generico early with a test of strength, really playing it up, but Generico sets the pace, kicking away his right hand and then running up the ropes, turning and delivering a huge Tornado DDT for a two count within the first minute and a half of the contest. From there, these guys go through some lucha spots before taking it to the outside and Generico hits a big Springboard Spaceman Plancha for a big pop. Claudio ends up bringing him back into the ring later with a Deadlift Superplex and gets his first two of the contest. Generico would end up catching him with a T-Bone Suplex into the buckles not too long after and would go for his Helluva Kick, but Claudio would avoid that and deliver an Avalanche European Uppercut in the corner before delivering the SwissBlade for a two count. Generico would try to battle back with a Swinging Headscissors, but Claudio would somehow reverse it and give him the Big Swing! Claudio would try to lift Generico and go for a Gorilla Press maneuver, but Generico would reverse and hit a Scoop Tombstone for a two count. Generico would think Brainbuster, but Claudio would reverse and then try to hit the Swiss Death, but Generico would use a flash reversal to turn it into a Small Package and get the three count out of nowhere! Generico gets a huge win, but doesn't make it out of the ring in time, as Claudio is furious and humiliated. Claudio gets the last laugh here, though, attacking Generico with a chair and then delivering the Ricola Bomb to send a big message to the locker room about what happens when you mess with the Swiss!
We see the next combatants head to the ring here, and it's Jon Moxley and Brodie Lee, with Moxley holding a mic this time. Moxley cuts a promo on his opponents for the night, The Motor City Machine Guns. Moxley says everyone loves them because their a couple of good looking guys with a bunch of flashy moves and little catchphrases. Moxley says tonight, he and Brodie don't need a catchy name, flashy moves, and they sure as Hell don't care about being pretty boys. They are here to prove tonight that they can beat one of the so-called best teams in the world by just being the vicious bastards they are, and there isn't anybody who's going to be able to stop them! The Machine Guns make their way out, and Shelley has a mic. He says Moxley is right about almost everything there, except for the part where they beat them tonight. He says he's going to do everyone a favor and beat these two buffoons as quickly as possible so the fans won't have to look at them any longer than they have to. With that, the Machine Guns rush the ring and fists start flying as the bell sounds!
The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) vs. Jon Moxley & Brodie Lee
This was a chaotic match that never really turned into a “tag team” battle. While fiery at first, the Machine Guns would find themselves over powered eventually by Moxley and Lee, and the match would mostly take place on the outside of the ring. The referee would end up just throwing the match out as Lee retrieved a table from under the ring and proceeded to powerbomb Chris Sabin through it! Moxley would head to the top rope, looking to jump down onto Sabin with some heinous move after the bell had already sounded, but Alex Shelley managed to hit the ring with a chair and attack Moxley with it, sending him flying off into the guardrail before any additional damage could be done to his partner. Lee would grab up Moxley and the two would make their way for the back as Shelley kneeled beside his friend, checking him and looking incensed.
Tommaso Ciampa makes his way out to the ring next, rocking out his lether vest and mohawk with a real bad attitude. Ciampa grabs the mic and says Chris Hero wants to call himself the “Knockout Artist”, but tonight, he ain't gonna be able to hit hard enough to knock out the “Psycho Killer”! Chris Hero makes his way out and says Ciampa is a psychopath, tonight, only a crazy person would be betting against Chris Hero! Hero makes his way down to the ring rocking out a L.A. Clippers inspired outfit of blue and red, and these two start trading blows right away.
Tommaso Ciampa vs. Chris Hero
Hero and Ciampa don't make this one pretty at all, and because of that, it really didn't last long. They would start by trading slaps in the ring, which lead to Hero kicking Ciampa in the face, only to have Ciampa answer back with a Discus Lariat that sends Hero out of the ring. On the outside, Ciampa does some pretty good work, pounding Hero off of the railing, apron, and turnposts, but Hero manages to catch him with a boot to the face, followed by a big slam into the turnpost himself, and then sends him back in the ring. Hero manages to send a Sliding Kick into the head of Ciampa, followed by a Senton, but only gets a two count. Hero keeps the pressure on, pounding the Sicilian into the mat and then lifts him, tossing him off the ropes and delivering a big Rolling Elbow, but he only gets a two, as Ciampa yells out to the crowd with clinched fists! Ciampa and Hero go back to trading shots in the ring, eventually blasting each other with closed fists before Ciampa delivers a knee to Hero and then tries to get him up for Project Ciampa. Hero manages to float over that, landing behind Ciampa, catching him with a boot as he was turning, and then blasting him with another Rolling Elbow! Hero once again thinks he has it, but Ciampa kicks out again! Hero lifts Ciampa one more time, blasting him with inside elbows before turning him over into the Hangman's position and then clipping him with an elbow behind the ear! Ciampa is out cold there, and though it took some serious work, Chris Hero gets the victory!
Next to make his way out is Prince Devitt, rocking a stylish leather jacket and a lot of attitude. Devitt takes the mic and lets everyone know he's ready to tear up the ring tonight with Tyler Black. He says he feels like his best work is ahead of him, and he says he feels it's going to happen right here in Ring of Fire, and he can't wait to prove everyone why he's the true “RockNRolla” of Professional Wrestling! Tyler Black makes his way out from here, mockingly applauding Devitt before ripping him for being a phony. He says Devitt only cares about himself, and doesn't give a damn about these fans, and that's fine with Black, because these fans can all go to Hell! He says he is the only thing that matters in Ring of Fire, and declares himself the “Architect of Greatness”! He says tonight, he begins building his empire, and he's going to start it by making the so-called “Prince” look like a “Jester”! Maybe Black should think about changing his last name to “Cheese” after those lame “burns”.
Tyler Black vs. Prince Devitt
Black tries to ground Devitt early and punish him, but Devitt shows a lot of fire and skill, reversing Black's attempts at holding him down and keeping the match at a much faster pace. Black is able to regain control with a well placed low mule kick out of view of the ref, and begins really punishing Devitt, choking him on the ropes and mocking the fans and Devitt as he does so, soaking in the boos. Black goes on to attempt to hit a Turnbuckle Powerbomb on Devitt, but Devitt manages to reverse with a Sunset Flip into a Double Stomp to buy him a second to breathe! Devitt then stalks Black and rushes him as he gets back to his feet, blasting him with a Front Dropkick that sends him flying into the buckles! From there, Devitt pulls him out and then heads up top, executing a BEAUTIFUL Diving Double Stomp that crushes Black, and he thinks he has it! Devitt would cover from there, but Black shocked everyone by kicking out at 2.999! Devitt tries to call for the end, not wanting to waste time, and lifts him up, looking for Bloody Sunday, but Black reverses with a knee and then hooks Devitt's leg, lifting him and dropping him with God's Last Gift! Black holds on and everyone thinks he has it now, but NO! Devitt kicks out now! Black is beside himself, arguing with the referee. Devitt gets back to his feet and Black catches him with a Superkick that staggers him. Black then sends a thrust kick into Devitt's knee, putting him into the kneeling position. From there, Black attempts to deliver the kneeling Superkick, but Devitt ducks it and shocks him, rolling him up with a very tight School Boy! The referee makes the count, and he gets the three! Devitt wins the match and quickly gets out of the ring as Black is left ripping at his hair, infuriated as he can't believe what just happened! Devitt is all smiles here, knowing he just burst Black's bubble, and Black just snarls at him with wide eyes, obviously thinking revenge or rematch or something along those lines.
The next combatants out are a tag team, which most will be familiar with by the name of reDRagon, Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish! Fish gets on the mic and says tonight, in a stroke of “genius” (note the sarcasm), the booker decided to put reDRagon in a match with the American Wolves! The fans like this, giving a big ovation, but O'Reilly takes the mic and goes on to say they've faced the Wolves a hundred times before and they've already proven they are the best! He says they'll gladly do it again tonight, but what they want is championship gold! The Wolves are out next and Davey Richards has the microphone now. Richards says reDRagon have a funny way of revising history, because as everybody knows, it's the WOLVES who have beaten reDRagon time and time again, and tonight is going to be no different. Richards says it's going to be the Wolves in the hunt for championship gold, while reDRagon are little more than their KILL for the evening!
The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) vs. reDRagon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish)
This, once again, is a match we've seen before and was bound to be a good one. These two teams have a style that just gels very well, and they were given a good amount of time to work. O'Reilly and Fish were playing the “cut off the ring” game early, working over Edwards, but eventually Edwards would break the match open, sending Fish to the outside with a dropkick and then he would dive out like a missile to crush him on the floor! Richards and O'Reilly would have a super stiff exchange in the middle of the ring after that, leading the fans to OOH and AAH as they brutalized each other with kicks and open hand strikes, but O'Reilly would manage to land a knee and then lock Richards in a standing Guillotine Choke to take over the momentum... briefly, because Richards would ram him into the buckles and then deliver a Capture Suplex to switch the tides yet again! Richards and Edwards would try to end the match with a German Suplex/Superkick combo on O'Reilly, but Fish would break up the pin with a Springboard Moonsault. After some quick strike exchanges and multiple pin attempts, O'Reilly would finally manage to catch Richards with a knee after he delivered Creeping Death to Fish, grabbing him and planting him with a Brainbuster afterwards to get the three count! O'Reilly and Fish would celebrate on the outside, looking beaten and hurt as the fans cheered on both teams, both teams knowing deep down this one really could have went either way.
STREET FIGHT
Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Steen
The words that needed said were said at the beginning of the night, so without any further pageantry, these two brutes hit the ring and started hitting each other, HARD! These two didn't bring any weapons into this match, despite the “STREET FIGHT” billing, but they did beat each other up all over ringside and into the crowd. This match seemed to be almost a dead heat until Joe managed to slam Steen on the floor on the outside and then set him up against the rail before running and bust him through the railing with a kick to the head! From there, Joe took Steen back into the ring and was thinking Muscle Buster, but Steen broke free of that and fought back, delivering a Pop-Up Powerbomb for a two count! Steen would call for the end and try for a Package Piledriver, only to have Joe block it and then deliver a big Enzuigiri to buy him some time. Steen pulls himself up in the corner and Joe heads over, landing a few big blows, but Steen ducks another Enzuigiri and then dropkicks Joe, sending him into the seated position in the corner before rushing and delivering a devastating Cannonball smash! Steen pulls Joe out and heads up top, flying off and hitting a very impressive Moonsault, but Joe shows his toughness, kicking out at two! Steen goads Joe, who staggers up, and then tries to lift him into the Fireman's Carry position, only have Joe reverse, and he locks it in, the Coquina Clutch! Joe tries to fall back with it, but Steen fights it and reverses, pulling a move out of Bret Hart's book by climbing up the buckles and falling backwards to pin Joe's shoulders to the mat, but Joe manages to just barely kick out at 2! Steen stalks Joe momentarily, trying to catch him with a Superkick, but Joe grabs the referee and pulls him in the way of the kick! Joe proceeds to pull a pair of brass knuckles out of his shorts and clips Steen in the jaw with it, knocking him out cold on the mat! The fans boo loudly, as Joe stands over Steen, looking down in anger, shaking with rage and yelling at him to get up with the referee still down. This lasts for over a minute, as Joe just paces around the ring. The referee begins to pull himself up and Joe puts the knuckles back into his shorts. Steen begins to stir on the mat, trying to bring himself to all fours as Joe pounces, grabbing him and locking him into the Coquina Clutch! The referee calls for the bell, as Steen is clearly done and can't escape this! Joe refuses to let go, though, even as officials come out and try to break this up, yelling for Christopher Daniels to show his face and fight him! Daniels shows up with a microphone in hand and Joe lets go, motioning for him to bring it on! Daniels gets on the mic and says, “Joe, that's enough! You want to fight me, tough guy!? You got me in two weeks!!!” Daniels throws down the mic and the fans let out a huge cheer as medics try to assist Steen out and Joe sneers down the ramp at Daniels' back, a man clearly possessed.
