At the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, OH
Tyler Black (ROH) vs. "Valhalla's Favorite Son" Brandon Bonham (EC)
Tyler Black had a good showing here, but Bonham showed a lot of grit and determination, catching Black with a La Magistral cradle to get the close three count finish. You've got to think Bonham just jumped to the top of the World Jr. Heavyweight title contenders list.
Sonjay Dutt & Amazing Red vs. Prince Devitt & Ryusuke Taguchi (WCPW)
Dutt and Red have been red hot, coming off some success in Mexico as part of the Global Warning group there, comprised of Great Lakes stars. Devitt and Taguchi, known as Apollo 55, are a very cohesive team, but they just couldn't handle the fast and furious assault from the veterans, Dutt and Red. Dutt would deliver his Asai DDT to Taguchi to pick up the win by pinfall.
Curt Hawkins vs. Spanky
Hawkins has been on a roll, but Spanky game in here tonight on a mission. Spanky played some misdirection mind games with Hawkins, hiding behind the ref at first and not really engaging, before attacking him viciously, and working him on the mat with some contorting submission holds. Hawkins would show some skills and power, taking control, but Spanky would execute a Sliced Bread #2 off the ring ropes, almost out of nowhere, to end this thing in convincing fashion. It would appear that he's going to be a force to be reckoned with.
"The Man That Gravity Forgot" PAC & Teddy Hart vs. AR Fox & Trent Barreta
PAC and Teddy Hart looked fantastic in this contest, working as heels, while Fox and Barreta held their own very well. Fox and Barreta were able to execute some great counters, and kept the fans behind them, but PAC's Shooting Star Senton Backsplash had everyone jumping off of their feet in amazement, getting the win over Barreta.
PAC would then get on the mic, saying he's done with the games, and he wants a match with Ricochet!
Anthony Nese & Hirooki Goto (RSR) vs. "The Notorious 187" Homicide & Jay Lethal
Homicide and Jay Lethal really put a hurting on their opponents tonight, showing great team work, but Nese and Goto knew a lot was on the line, namely Goto's title contention, and fought through it, coming hard and fast. Goto would use his Vertical Suplex into a Uranage Slam on Jay Lethal to end the match for his team, getting a good pop from the crowd.
Super Dragon & "The Warrior" Gran Akuma vs. ACH & Consequences Creed
Dragon and Akuma came in here off of two impressive, yet losing, efforts at the last two shows. ACH and Creed have been a red hot team, holding a number of victories now, but tonight was not their night. Dragon and Akuma have huge and dangerous arsenals, and laid into their opponents with fury and a mission. Dragon would deliver a sick Psycho Driver on ACH, which ACH sold like death, giving way to victory for the team.
"The Perfect Weapon" Delirious, BJ Whitmer, "The Contract Killer" Rocky Romero vs. Chris Dickinson, "The Psycho Shooter" Drake Younger, "The Anarchist" Arik Cannon
Stiff, brutal contest, here, as everybody looked pretty good here, but Rocky Romero was probably the one that turned the most heads, showing why he's one of the best in the business with his crisp submissions, punishing strikes, and great agility. Cannon looked like he might have hurt his knee at one point on a dive to the outside, and that could have attributed to the result. Whitmer would deliver a big Reverse STO to Younger, rolling and cinching in his Peruvian Necktie, and it was all over there.
After the match, Dickinson would explode, attacking EVERYONE, smashing a chair over his opponent's heads, kicking Younger, and tossing Cannon into the crowd. This guy is insane!
"Classic" Colt Cabana vs. "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson
Cabana-rama was in full affect tonight, much to the displeasure of CM Punk at ringside. This was the third and final match of his trial series, and he had a huge roadblock ahead, as Bryan Danielson loomed on, ready for war. This was a completely mat based match, as the fans watched on in tension, each man showing the fantastic submission and counter wrestling skills they acquired over the years. Danielson would actually shake Cabana's hand after one exchange, showing his respect, and Punk had seen enough. It was obvious he'd come in with a contingency plan. Punk would grab the ring bell and enter the ring... and smash DANIELSON WITH THE BELL! Danielson is out cold, and the referee has no choice but to call it. The first disqualification in Great Lakes history, and the fans are LIVID!
Cabana runs Punk off, who is gloating, basking in the boos. He takes a mic, and says, "Too bad, Colt, but you lose! No match for you, I'm afraid. All was for nothing!" This leads to "Perfect Strangers" hitting the speakers, and out walks Shane Douglas, Great Lakes commissioner! He states that Punk's demands have been entertained long enough, and it's all over! He says that Punk isn't the man who makes matches in Great Lakes, and he SURE AS HELL doesn't run the NWA, and therefore, he doesn't really get a say in who he faces, and he WILL be defending his championship against Colt Cabana at the next Great Lakes DVD taping!
Punk starts yelling about showing him some God damn respect as the World champion, but Douglas just laughs, saying he's not done. He says he has a feeling Bryan Danielson probably wants a piece of him, as well, after that little debacle, so it's going to be a TRIPLE THREAT MATCH, something he says he knows a little bit about, having been in the first one ever, and he pats Punk on the shoulder, telling him they are always a lot of fun! So, at the next show, it's PUNK... CABANA... and THE AMERICAN DRAGON for the NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP! HIT MY MUSIC, HA HA!
And that's how you do it.
NWA Great Lakes Title:
Jimmy Jacobs (c) vs. "The Round Eye Samurai" Bobby Fish
Jacobs heads to the ring, blood on his face and holding his ribs, as the medics trail behind him. He looks pissed off, holding a mic in his left hand and stating he doesn't know WHO DID IT, but somebody attacked him in the back, and he's PISSED OFF ABOUT IT! He says he doesn't care, because a champion fights no matter what, and he's not going to be a coward. Whatever happens happens, but tonight, he's fighting Bobby Fish, for better or worse, and then he'll find out who did this!
The match then began, and Fish tried to show Jacobs some respect, but Jacobs was fuming and wouldn't have it, bringing the fight hard to Fish. Fish decided to say screw it, and started going hard, kneeing the shit out of Jacobs' ribs and trying to break him. Jacobs would show amazing fighting spirit, but Fish would deliver a jumping spin kick to his head that leveled him, knocking him out cold, and it was all over. BOBBY FISH IS THE NEW GREAT LAKES CHAMPION!
Jacobs would get up after coming to, and shook Fish's hand, raising it, when all of the sudden "Personal Jesus" hits and out walks BJ Whitmer! Whitmer is smiling, clapping, as Jacobs suddenly begins to realize who it was that attacked him.
BJ Whitmer:
That's right, Jimmy! It was me! You don't have to look far, because I'm right here! I told you I wanted to get my title shot, and you didn't listen. Sure, Bobby won the ladder match, he won the contendership, but you know something, Jimmy? I don't give a damn. I wanted to kick your ass, and I did, and I'll do it again! You wanna go, we can go right now!
Whitmer and Jacobs both converge on the outside of the ring, hammering each other with punches, until officials come out, and Douglas heads out there again.
Shane Douglas:
Woah, woah, woah! Alright, alright, that's enough! You guys want to fight so bad? Well, we've got a #1 contendership trophy with nobody holding it, so I got an idea... how about you two fight for it at the next show, settle this damn thing, and the winner will get their title shot whenever they want! Until then, we got a show to do, so move along!
Whitmer grabs another mic.
BJ Whitmer:
You know what, Shane, I got a better idea... let's make this a three-way dance, as I got another bone to pick around here, and it's with a Mr. Chris Dickinson! I wanna kill two birds with one machete, cause I'm ready to make some heads roll around here!
Shane thinks about, then smiles.
Shane Douglas:
Another triple threat match, you say? I LOVE IT! WHITMER... JACOBS... DICKINSON, for the #1 Contendership Trophy! BAM! WISH GRANTED! NOW GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!
And they do.
NWA World Women's Title:
Mickie Knuckles vs. Gail Kim (c)
Gail Kim and Knuckles put on a hell of a match, as Kim played the heel and had the fans behind the monsterous Knuckles, who tried to use her power to beat Kim relentlessly. Kim has good technical skills and speed, and needed all of it to overcome her adversary tonight, catching Knuckles with a tight Huracanrana roll-up to get the close three count, barely surviving! She looked very relieved, clutching her belt as she left.
NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Title:
Ricochet (c) vs. Kota Ibushi
"Amazing" pretty well sums up this spotfest, and that is what it was, but damn, nobody can deny the ability of these two. Ricochet actually played the underdog a bit here, as Ibushi is one of the best juniors from Japan, and his striking and technique put a real hurting on the champ, who didn't look like he'd make it through this, at times, with his reign in tact. Ibushi as some real graceful aerial skills, but Ricochet is an aerial ace, and that's what turned the corner for him. He could hang on the mat, he has some striking skills, but his aerial and lucha libre skills are very hard to match for anyone, and Ibushi found that out the hard way. Ibushi seemed like he might have the match won after a textbook, hard 450 Splash, but Ricochet managed to kick out. His very innovative Phoenix Plex also looked like it might have the match won for him, and everybody thought it did, but Ricochet gutted his way out of it, rolling his shoulder at almost a three count. In the end, Ricochet would go on a tear, as these two executed counter after counter, Ricochet finally nailing a Backslide Driver, followed by a Shining Enzuigiri, and then the always impressive 630 Senton to get the win and retain!
They shook hands after this match, and the fans all cheered, but as expected, something had to happen. Out came PAC, who got a mixed reaction, having picked up a big win tonight with his awesome aerial skills. PAC says he wants his shot at Ricochet, and he's tired of being ducked and dodged! Ricochet gets on the stick, and says "BRING IT ON!" and we've got our World Junior Heavyweight title contest for the next show! It'll be a good one!
