CLEVELAND, OHIO
SEPTEMBER 1, 2012
The show begins with Dave Prazak, Raven, and Mick Foley going over the huge line-up tonight, as we have a show chalked full of big matches. This leads into Shane Douglas coming out to a big ovation.
Shane Douglas:
It is The Franchise's distinct pleasure to welcome all of you in Cleveland here to what is the biggest show in NWA Great Lakes history. This company has blossomed over the past few months, and it's because there is more heart in that locker room... more drive and determination than anywhere else in the world combined.
That roster, each and every one of them, they've all heard that they'd never make it in this business; they've all been held down, dropped, let go, and told the best of luck, and FINALLY luck has smiled upon us all, and we're here tonight to show the world GREAT LAKES means GREAT WRESTLING, and nobody on Earth does it better.
It's all for you people, our fans, the best in the world, and we do our best to give it all to you each and every show. So without further ado, I present to you the best pound-for-pound wrestling today!
Douglas steps out of the ring, and the show begins.
MATCH ONE
Kimber Lee vs. Becky Bayless
Kimber Lee was fierce in this contest from the beginning, sending Bayless down to the mat by her hair and gauging her eyes, reeling the crowd in with her tenacity, as she would scream and grit her teeth in anger. Bayless would catch her with a quick inside cradle to swing the momentum, executing multiple clotheslines and dropkicks to unsettle Lee, before getting a near fall with a DDT. Kimber Lee would regain control, eventually winning the match by submission after locking on a tight Half Crab.
MATCH TWO
"The Master of the Dark Hadou" Kenny Omega vs. Samuray Del Sol
This was a short, but entertaining contest, as these two would show off their agility and charisma in a lucha inspired spotfest. Both men would perform graceful dives, and hit some high impact moves, with Sol showing more speed, but Omega showing perhaps a bit more polish. SDS had the fans on his side after some wild takedowns and counters, but Omega showed his dominance, nailing a Leap Frog Bulldog, followed by his theatrical Hadouken chest strike, and then finishing the match with the ever impressive Croyt's Wrath for the pinfall victory.
MATCH THREE
Curt Hawkins vs. "The Russian Hooligan" Alex Koslov
Hawkins had the size advantage, and seemed very confident in his abilities, taking the fight right to Koslov viciously at the start, but Koslov showed his mean streak and skills, turning the tables early on. Koslov is a sound technician, but he's also very quick and strong, and knows what he's doing in the ring after years of traveling and studying many different styles in the ring. Koslov would wow the crowd with his agility and showmanship, but would turn the fans against him with his arrogance, performing a theatrical dancing series of stomps while wearing his ushanka on his head. Hawkins would battle back in the end, catching Koslov with a back elbow to counter an avalanche splash, attempting to his the Suicide Solution, but Koslov would land on his feet and deliver a Discus Elbow, followed by a Russian Legsweep floated into a Cobra Stretch, which he calls the Red Scare. That's enough to end this match, as Hawkins is forced to tap out.
MATCH FOUR
"The Contract Killer" Rocky Romero vs. Anthony Nese
Anthony Nese had the size advantage here, but Romero is just so dangerous on so many levels, he's very hard to prepare for. These two have been in many matches with each other, mostly multi-man matches, so coming into this singles contest, they both had an idea of what was coming, and were ready to bring the fans a great, fast paced match. Romero might be the best pound-for-pound wrestler on the roster, but he also has a lot of charisma, and had the fans behind him, as Nese was continually getting frustrated by his ability to counter him and one up him. Nese would get nasty, driving his knee into Romero's face in the corner and choking him, trying anything to secure an advantage, but Romero would continually work over his arm and lock him into Cross Armbars, trying to wear down the appendage and seal Nese's fate. Nese would make a calculated error, coming off the top with a 450 Splash after taking too long to ascend, which lead to Romero grabbing his arm and rolling him into a Cross Armbar, causing Nese to tap and ending the match in convincing fashion for the "Contract Killer."
MATCH FIVE
"The Man That Gravity Forgot" PAC vs. Trent Barreta
These two each other pretty well from tag team action, where PAC has always seemed to come out on top. Barreta is a great competitor and a fan favorite, as he has great in ring presence and energy, always ready to take the fight to his opponents, but he has yet to really secure a defining victory, and this would certainly be one. PAC is never a man to be one upped in any match, as he is simply a physical specimen and phenom in the air, while also possessing very sound ground and striking skills, which he honed during his time in Japan. Barreta would find himself down many times in this contest, but his heart would shine through, while PAC, the heel in this contest, would become increasing vocal and frustrated with not being able to put Barreta away. Barreta would manage to catch PAC with a Sunset Flip Powerbomb off the top as a counter, holding on tight to get the shocking upset victory, sending the fans into roaring chants of approval! Barreta couldn't believe it, while PAC looked absolutely livid!
MATCH SIX
The Necro Butcher vs. Finlay
This match could have sold the show all by itself, as these fans were super hot to see the brawl that was about to ensue. These two stormed the center of the ring, and the closed fists started flying, as Finlay got the better of it and sent Necro to the floor with knees and fists. Necro would grab a chair and smash it into Finlay's head, before tossing him into the guardrail. These two would then fight throughout the crowd for most of the match, getting up close and personal with the fans, Necro getting slip open in the process. Finlay would eventually set two chairs up in the ring, and would sit in one, prompting Necro Butcher to sit in the other, before the two would exchange slaps and punches, eventually leading to a war of headbutts! Finlay would go on an all out assault, delivering punches and European uppercuts, before driving knee after knee into Necro's sternum. Necro would just start swinging wildly, catching Finaly with a major punch combo, but Finlay would catch him with a massive haymaker that sent him down to the mat face first, blood oozing from his cranium. Finlay would pin him, and the match would end, as the fans cheered for both men. Necro got up, holding his fists up, not sure what happened after being knocked out, before raising Finlay's hand and accepting defeat in a really classy moment for the fans.
MATCH SEVEN
"Captain Charisma" Christian Cage vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles
Christian was definitely playing the heel in this contest, mockingly not slapping the fans hands and acting very smug. Styles got a huge ovation; being one of the most decorated champions of all-time, and one of the best performers in history will get you that sometimes. Cage would try to slow the pace, playing mind games with Styles, who was super amped for this match, but got caught with an eye poke from Christian, who went on to chop block Styles and make him pay with a series of stomps and knee holds, working over the crowd the whole time with his banter, trying to get in the head of Styles. Styles would turn the tides with a springboard into a clothesline as a whip reversal, and followed by with a Fosbury Flop, crushing Christian on the outside as he tried to recover! Styles would beat on Christian and try to get him back on the inside, but Christian nailed him with a back elbow, before running and jumping off the apron, connecting with a Flying European Uppercut to send him into the guardrail hard! Christian would Styles into the ring and deliver a big Frog Splash, but only got a two count. Styles would catch Christian with a Discus Lariat to get the momentum shifted back his way, before nailing a Stylin' DDT for a two count. In the end, Styles would reverse a Top Rope Huracanrana attempt from Christian into a Super Styles Clash, sending the crowd into a frenzy after a very well worked and entertaining match from both men.
MATCH EIGHT
CIMA vs. The American Dragon (East Coast)
Dragon was in full heel mode here, as we had a potential show stealer on our hands. These two would fight all throughout the crowd, and pulled out every stop, from CIMA hitting his Iconoclast and Mad Splash, to Dragon delivering a Dragon Suplex into the Cattle Mutilation, as well as locking on the LeBell Lock, trying desperately to get the submission, but CIMA would not stay down. CIMA tried to nail his Crossfire a number of times, but Dragon would not let that happen, continually finding ways to avoid it. Likewise, Dragon would try on three occasions to lock on his Crossface Chickenwing, but nothing was going, as CIMA had it well scouted and would block it each and every time, getting to the ropes at one point and hanging on for dear life. The referee would get in Dragon's face about holding onto holds when the rope break was called, prompting him to remind him, "I HAVE 'TIL FIVE, REFEREE!" CIMA would deliver a big superkick, followed by the Schwein, thinking he had it won, but Dragon would escape and lock him into a quick Triangle Choke, which CIMA would get to the ropes and break. After a series of elbows, Dragon would attempt to deliver another Dragon Suplex, but CIMA would escape and catch Dragon with a quick spin kick to the gut, followed by a running boot to the side of his head, and then lifting him up and sending him down hard to the mat with the Nagoya Castle, but it was still not enough to finish the match. CIMA would body slam Dragon and head up top again, maybe looking for another Mad Splash, but Dragon would surge up and connect with a European Uppercut, followed by a Superplex, which earned him a two count. Dragon was furious at the referee, and would pick up CIMA off with the mat and go apeshit, basically. He proceeded to blast him with European uppercuts and elbows, finishing with a brutal Roundhouse kick to his head, which staggered him. CIMA would stumble, looking like he was about to fall, before Dragon cradles him in and dumps him with a bridging Regal-Plex! The referee makes the count, and it's all over! The American Dragon has succeeded!
Dragon would celebrate in the ring, shaking CIMA's hand afterwards, showing no hard feelings about the contest, when suddenly, from crowd runs in SPANKY! Spanky tackles Dragon to the mat, and begins to pummel him with fists, as officials and security run out to break this up! What gives!? I guess we'll have to find out later, as Spanky is escorted to the back to a chorus of boos.
MATCH NINE
NWA GREAT LAKES TITLE
"The Round Eye Samurai" Bobby Fish (c) vs. "The Wrestling Machine" Kurt Angle
Harsh words have been traded by these two very prideful individuals, but the time for talk was over. Angle came into this match wanting to prove a point, and he did just that early on, really putting on a wrestling clinic, while Fish showed his training and tried to hang in there, having trained in both wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Fish would get more comfortable after locking on an armbar that looked like it might snap Angle's arm right out of socket, going on to deliver some very hard blows after that. Fish would get a two count with a Swandive Headbutt, which seemed to wake Angle back up and send him back on the attack. Angle would come back with a Belly-to-Belly Suplex, followed up with an attempted Ankle Lock, but Fish would escape and nail a flying knee strike to get a two count. Angle would unload with a series of German Suplexes, trying to finish it with his Olympic Slam, but Fish managed to break free of that and lock Angle into a half nelson, from which he began just laying into him with brutal knee after brutal knee, using it to set up a Helio that earned him a two count. Angle would catch Fish up top with a Super Belly-to-Belly Suplex, before attempting another Ankle Lock, but Fish would escape again, this time sending Kurt down with a kick in the process. Angle would duck a big Spin Kick to the head, attempting the Olympic Slam again, but Fish would roll off of it and deliver a big Fireman's Carry into Double Knee Gutbuster! Angle would kick out of the pin attempt there, before fighting back with headbutts and European uppercuts, eventually trying to lock on a Rear Naked Choke, but Fish would get to the ropes to break free. Angle would try to whip Fish, but Fish would reverse it and then catch him with a Tilt-to-Whirl Backbreaker, followed by a Single Jump Moonsault, which nearly earned him with the three count! Angle would use an Inside Cradle to nearly get a two count as Fish tried to pick him up, following that up with a Lariat, and then attempting his own Moonsault, but Fish would move out of the way. From there, Fish would deliver a very hard Falcon Arrow, but Angle would still kick out, refusing to quit! Fish would lock in Angle, looking like he wanted an Exploder Suplex, but Angle would break free and switch it, delivering a release German Suplex, but Fish would get to his feet immediately, clinching his fists and screaming, running and catching Angle with another Flying Knee Attack! From there, Fish would pick up Angle and dump him with the Exploder Suplex! Fish gets in the corner, waiting and anticipating the kill, as Angle stumbles up, his mouth sort of open and his eyes, dazed, and that's when it happen... Leaping Spin Kick to the head, nearly decapitating the Olympic Gold Medalist! Fish hooks the inside leg, counting the win off with his hand in the air, as the referee counted to three. Angle would shake Fish's hand after a very impressive defense, knowing he'd been bested on this night by the very intense up and comer, the current NWA Great Lakes champion, Bobby Fish!
MATCH TEN
NWA WORLD JR. HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Ricochet (c) vs. "The Whole Shebang!" Johnny Gargano (Hybrid Pro)
Ricochet has been a fighting champion, and he has consistently tried to fight the best talent from around the NWA. Few can argue that Johnny Gargano does not fall onto that short list, as this young man has made waves in both Ring of Honor and Hybrid Pro, recently putting together a very impressive string of wins. Gargano is a Cleveland native, and these fans were very torn, showing electric enthusiasm throughout, as these two put on a very well worked spotfest, entertaining them with their agility and creativity. You could just tell by the buzz and the momentum of the match that something big was about to happen, as Gargano just seemed to want this so bad, and had Ricochet expertly scouted. He would survive most of Ricochet's arsenal, expertly avoiding the big hitters, most notably dodging the Double Rotation Moonsault, which spelled doom for the champion. Gargano would go on to deliver his Hurts Donut, before locking on the Crosston Crab, having worked over the back most of the match, and that was it. Ricochet had to tap. WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!
Johnny Gargano celebrates in the crowd with his hometown people, no better place to be having the biggest moment of his life, as he stands here in Cleveland as the best Jr. Heavyweight on the planet!
